Due to the astonishing events that took place on this very Saturday, Notre Dame could find itself situated with as good a ranking as #5. USC lost, Texas escaped as did Tennessee, and Florida did not play brilliantly. So basically, Notre Dame could be ranked #5 through #8. Also, Quinn's shot at the Heisman isn't gone yet! 295 yards, 3 TD 1 TD rushing and No INT's. Troy Smith, though, was carried by the play of his team by throwing for around 180 yards and 1 or 2 TD's in a romp over the Gophers. Brady is looking good guys....

While today's events will probably make Nd higher in the polls, it essentially eliminated them from the national title game.

USC losing is Nd's worst nightmare. Now, assuming USC wins the remainder of their games and loses to Nd, they will be a 2 loss team. The win won't look as impressive. Plus, the way USC played today, I think Cal has a great chance at beating them, meaning that Nd possible win over USC will be further diminished by the fact that USC will have 3 losses. The rest of Nd's schedule won't help their computer (or human) rankings either. GTech will probably lose again. MSU is in a free-fall. Pur-don't has lost their offense. NC just fired their coach and is 1-7. Stanford will probably be one of the only teams this year without a victory. And of course there's Army, Navy and Air Force. Nd now has to hope that no team (other than the Big East teams) finishes with one loss. At this point, the BCS standings will almost certainly favor the loser of the OSU/Michigan game (assuming both are undefeated going into Nov. 18). A one loss SEC team will defintely be ahead of Nd, as will Cal if they win the rest of the way. It is almost certain that Nd is out of the national championship race, though they still have an good chance at making a BCS game, assuming they can win at USC.

I don't know, I have the impression that the media is completely sold by Troy Smith.

Unfortunately, the reputation of the Heisman Trophy is headed for the shitter. Back-to-back corruption is shameful... my guess is that Willie Williams---who is trying to get into UCLA next season---will end up winning it next.

For some reason, I don't see ND jumping TN or Florida. Maybe jumping Auburn, probably jumping Texas, and depending on how far USC falls, jumping USC as well. Luckily, there's nobody that will really leapfrog us this week.

Also, Brady will be #2 in the heisman race until OSU loses or Troy Smith has to get bailed out by the talent surrounding him. The only time that will probably happen will be the UM game. If Michigan wins that game, it helps ND in so many ways it isn't funny.

Yup...USC losing does eliminate us from the NC race...unless some bizarre miracles occured...which won't happen.

That's ok though, we really have not earned that distinction. A BCS game would be more than sufficient to cement a good season.

Yea, it's okay if ND doesn't make it to the NC. I'd much rather play a team in BCS bowl that we could beat (BC, Boise St, etc..).

Even though the BCS is fairly new and if ND makes a BCS bowl this year, how many coaches can say they made a BCS bowl in each of their first 2 seasons? Pretty impressive IMO.

and i really hope that WV/Louisville don't make the championship game. It would make for one TERRIBLE championship game. Usually these types of teams have at least one good team on their schedule to knock them off so the BCS doesn't go batshit crazy. Unfortunately, with this odd scheduling bit, the only good team on each of their schedules is the other. Think of OSU or Michigan. Now think of Louisville. They aren't in the same league.

I doubt ND will get any love from the polls , not enuff to move up to number 5 , and I agree USC losing is really bad , I Hate those SOB's , but with our remaining schedule (being so weak as per the media) beating an Undefeated USC was our last shot to jump into the title game. But one last thing to think about , and this is really scary and I bet nobody has thought about it yet , but if the OSUvsMichigan is really close it is posible that they may not move at all in the polls or maybe just switch Mich #1 OSU #2 if Mich wins or even a number 3 spot might not bring either one down in the BCS and they could replay each other in the title game !!!

That's the difference between ABC/ESPN coverage and CBS.

You guys are all saying the right things. Now, it will take pigs to fly, but Notre Dame by the smallest of margins still has a shot at the NC. Now, now, now, don't hit the wall as you read this. It can happen for these reasons: The loser of the Ohio St./Michigan game loses by 20 or more points. This, obviously, would show that the losing team played terribly. Assuming they were still #1 or#2, they would probably drop 3 or 4 spots. The winner of the WV/Louisville game would have to lose to one of their upcoming opponents (Pitt and Rutgers I believe). The loser, IMO, would drop significantly in the standings. Texas would have to lose again, either in the regular season or in the Big 12 championship. And for Florida, Auburn, and Tennessee, well, an SEC team can lose at any time because of the rigorous schedule. Only one of those SEC teams would come out with 1 loss after the SEC championship, which could possibly be a problem for ND if the SEC team was ranked higher. However, if ND is ranked higher than the SEC team, than I think that, against all odds, that Notre Dame still has a shot at the NC.
