Florida and Urban LIAR apparently need him. I personally think he's overrated. I have seen him play and I like who we have over him.

Projecting DT / NT is a dangerous thing....if it were as easy as many people THINK it is, then NFL teams would have a much better success rate at drafting quality DT and NT in the early rounds of the draft. As it is, there is about a 50-50 shot that talent and ability at a previous level will carry over to the next level and I think this is even smaller on the HS-to-college transition than the college-to-NFL transition.

The only reason ND "needed" Omar was to play the percentages. If the incoming class had kept Newman, Hunter and Cwynar, then the chances of having at least one of them be a dominating college player were virtually certain. Losing Hunter from the class makes it more important for Newman and Cwynar to be as good as advertised and have it translate to the field in D1 ball.

All of that said, the emergence of Ian Williams in the second half of the season was more important than Omar Hunter's decision to drink the Urban Kool-Aid. Williams has SHOWN college ability on the field. Hunter (and any other recruit for that matter) have shown HIGH-SCHOOL ability. That's definitely not to say that Hunter is going to bust - hell, he may wind up as a collegiate hall of famer for all any of us know - but it is enough for me to brush off his defection and move on....

Ian Williams will only get better which is good but this is a position of depth and like Moostache said it is hard to tell who is going to be good. So, the more the better!!!

Omar was still a big lose because of his potential and added depth to the DT position! It kills me how people on this site think Omar and Pryor are both overrated...hmmmmmm anything to do with them not coming to ND? I like koolaid too but really people wake-up!!

I wouldn't say they are overrated. But I do think that people on the N.D. boards built Omar up to be our savior, whichhe nor any other recruit, commit, or current player will be by themselves. You can see how people have built him up because almost every thread devoted to a player on the DL gets hijacked by people bringing up Omar. N.D. will be just fine in my opinion with the talent we have coming in and the talent on hand.

Guys,
I am dissapointed that Omar is not going to be wearing the gold helmet like everyone else here whether they admit it or not. HOWEVER, I also was one of the first people here to point out that Omar was not going to walk in and take the NT position from Ian. He played exceptionally well in 2007. With a year of off-season training, he will be stout in the middle. Further, I am very happy with the incoming DL class we have committed. I want guys who want to be IRISH. Whatever Omar becomes in college, he is not going to wear the gold helmet and I will root against him at UF just like I did this year. I never have cheered so hard for UM like in the bowl game this year when they gave a serious beatdown to Urbie.

I. Williams definetly suprised me last year. I did not think that he would have contributed as well as he did. He deserves it.

Finally found some stats on his freshman season:

45 tackles
125 minutes of game play
1 tackle per 2.77 minutes (I figure thats about 10 tackles a game or about 120 a year!! Can anyone say Trevor Laws?)

From the following source:
Her Loyal Sons » Ian Williams, All American

And it’s why every time I saw Ian run off the field during a defensive series, I promptly yelled, “Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!” and then finished whatever beer I was holding.

Congratulations, Ian. Next Stop: Heisman!
