Hey Guys

I am a defensive coordinator/ linebackers coach and have a couple of kids who would benefit from some exposure in the next two years. What are some ways to get their names out to colleges in the mean time? Any ideas?

Thanks

Summer camps are a great way to build attention towards athletes. Most colleges dont have game film on recruits in their early high school careers, so these kids go to camps as a way of getting their names out in the recruiting world. If coaches/scouts are intrigued by how they perform, well, then you'll most likely see the same coaches and coaches in your stands when the season comes around!

Thanks. I knew camps was probably the answer...I guess I didnt know if coaches sent out film of their players or not to colleges. I have finally got some Linebackers with college potential and would love to see their talents at the next level to help them continue their education. Any other info would help. thanks again

I hate to see talent go unnoticed. Usually happens a lot in smaller or lower leveled divisions and even in some states altogether.

It is also essential for the coach to help his players out. Recruiting is so much different nowadays, especially with the advancements in social media and networking. Emailing coaches or scouts about possibly players that have the skills for the next level would probably be a great help as well.

Now, Im from Canada, and you guys probably do things a little differently down south. I mean, the differences in high school football alone between U.S and Canada is astounding, in both level of talent and atmosphere. So, it just happens that CIS recruiting follows the same "less-important" path. So, basically, what I'm trying to tell you is do what you can for these kids, cause if you think they can do it, nurture their talent and dreams, and help them succeed. The rest, well, that is in their hands.

If you truly feel a player is on that level camps are good/great but also get in contact with the college fball departments. Hopefully your staff has built a rapport with the college staffs in your area. This will help get the player started with getting invites to the higher level camps instead of the basic ones.
If the player is that good they will be found at the camps or video that you help them circulate. Sorry little rambling there. PM if you need specific help or contacts. Always have game film ready btw.

Well Cali, I can tell you from experience that summer camps are a great way to get the door open. I started out several years ago taking as many kids to camps as our budget (and my bank account) would allow. It was a win win. My guys benifited from the extra practice time (and better coaching), and the college coaches could see the players develop over the course of 4 years. It has worked pretty well for me. I have yet to send a highlight tape of a player to a school and I have coached 9 guys that signed to play in the SEC, and over 30 to different small colleges. I guess its a little late for your linebackers now, but I would recommend this for future players. It might be benificial to get your local paper to give these guys as much press as possible. The more they are in the local paper, better their name will be out there. You would be suprised at how quickly a local story can gain wings when people get interested. Good luck on your season!

I was recruited by several smaller D1 schools as well as several Ivy League schools coming out of high school simply as a result of my high school coaches reaching out to the staffs at these schools and telling them about me. I had no interest whatsoever in playing college ball, but essentially what my coaches did was email a few guys saying, for example, "I've got a 6'5" 290 pound lineman who can really move. You guys should take a look." More often than not the college coaches would respond asking for game film, the HS coaches would send it, and the college coaches would evaluate it and either get in contact with me or tell my coaches they had no interest. I never went to a camp or anything like that as I also played baseball and basketball, but some teammates did and it helped a few get noticed by major CFB powerhouses. Camps are probably worth it if you can do them, but not necessary.

Camps. Have them go to as many camps at schools they're interested in. If they have the talent, they will get noticed. This applies to just about every college sport. Make sure they are aggressive in shaking hands and saying "I want to go to school X" and "what do I need to work on" and things like that at the camp.
