I think it also needs to be pointed out that JC's great play happen to fall in line with ACamp shaving his goat and putting Jimmy in as his avatar.... coincidence, I think not...
just think what he'll do agaisnt SC after Acamp shaves is balls and gets a JC tattoo on his chest...........

Clausen is playing well. The thing I do wish he'd correct is that hitch in his throwing motion. For example the TD pass to the Kyle Rudolph. Nice play. But he's got to learn to use his wrist in that situation because the area is so congested. And a wrist motion enables a QB to better pump fake because it's just a wrist flicker. That little hitch windup limits his flexibility. Clausen has the arm strength, so that should be coached out of him. (Kerry Collins had it bad coming out of Penn State.)
And Re: IrishFan4Life's link to the Echos... video. I really enjoyed that, IF4L. Thanks for posting it.
I had forgotten how good those guys and Joe Montana were. ND is nowhere near that yet as a team. And Montana had FBI (Football Instinct) that was phenomenal. Jimmy can only pray for that kind of field vibe.
SteveM

I'd like to see him do a better job of hiding the ball on running plays. He sticks that ball out there the second he receives the snap and it telegraphs the play to the defense. Otherwise....![]()
the thread title should be changed to...
'Jimmy Clausen. King of the Laser, Rocket Arm.'

That's the stretch play, in which the QB is actually taught to do that. Watch the way Peyton Manning does it. He sticks the ball out immediately, and runs (kinda looking like he doesn't know what he's doing) towards the RB with the ball out the entire time. But on play-action, Peyton snaps it back and looks downfield. We don't run play-action off it hardly at all, so he looks like he's telegraphing the play, when in reality he's supposed to be setting up the play-action.

As for the original point of the thread, NDMontana, you know from my over-the-top reactions to our old arguments about him that I've got a major man-crush on Clausen. I'm not one to be overly blindly optomistic, but he's a special, special player. I've been reading about him down here in Socal since he was a 7th grader (no lie), so to see him flourishing into IMO the best pro-style QB in college football today is quite thrilling/satisfying. ND has a great one boys and girls, so let's enjoy this next year and a half that we have with him...
He really sticks that ball out here on every play, imo, even on dives. I'm not saying that is the root cause of our running (or lack there of) game. I just don't think it helps!!!I would prefer two and half!!!
As to the original counterpoint: Yep, I know what a strech play is!!!He really sticks that ball out here on every play, imo, even on dives. I'm not saying that is the root cause of our running (or lack there of) game. I just don't think it helps!!!
Yeah, I friggin' hate the stretch play personally. It's too slow developing, and then we sometimes run it to the short-side of the field with AA, when he needs room to run, so of course it gets stuffed. I haven't noticed that Clausen sticks the ball out on all run plays, I'll have to look for that. All those little things add up when you can't run the ball for crap.
Let's pray for 2 1/2 more years!!!

He promised four national championships so I figure he owes two at least!!!
I think he'll stay around!![]()
Sticking the ball out for everyone to see does not matter. It is just like weariing your seat belt when you drive. You want everything to be safe.
The tb needs to focus on taking the handoff. Most important thing is that the tb is allowed to see the ball clearly
Fundamental football.
Sticking the ball out for everyone to see can be used as a trick when QB pulls out just before the exchange and runs bootleg (for e.g.)
Personally, I don't like the play, but I think it is the grandchild of the short toss sweep, which later became the sprint draw, and is now called the stretch.
It could be a result of too many fumbled tosses.
Who knows.
NFL just brooke down the strech play that the Falcons used against GB this weekend.... they went play action out of it and it was wide open for a TD.....
just sayin
Absolutely. At the very least fake the hand off and run a qb boot the other way. JC could throw or run off the boot. You could have Rudolph run a seven yard drag route and at least have that open. The Broncos (during the Elway years) and Niners (during the Montana years) ran a play like that all the time. It was called Boot Option. It was the play called when Dwight Clarke made "The Catch". It was highly effective and I think ND could incorporate it into their offense.
