I know we are all pissed. I, for one, was absolutely fuming after this loss. I was almost getting excited about all the talk about a replacement for head coach. I chose not to post a thread for a day or so so I could try and get some objective thinking about the whole situation. Here's basically what I think and believe.

In 2004, CW came in with a bad football team left by TW. Some fairly talented players but playing bad football. Such is TW the coach. CW started basically from scratch. Brady Quinns class was in it's second year. CW took those players and yes, DEVELOPED them for an off season.

Then came 2005. We were happy again. Beating teams we thought we'd lose to. Beating USC (don't get me started, I say we won that game! But I digress). That was Brady's (and class) 3rd year. Hope bounded! Heisman trophy, NC run for 2006 etc.. 2006 regressed a bit but we still made a BCS bowl (which, BTW, we shouldn't have been in).

Then the slate was wiped clean. Literally clean at almost all skill positions. (I know, I know, I am not telling you anything you don't know already) Well, maybe needing reminded of. Anyway,,,,

2007, practically brand new team, just like CW had in 2004! Players inexperienced and young at all key and skill positions. A deep team divide evidenced by the play, talk and attitude of Sully, BIG mistake at the beginning by CW (I'll admit freely), injuries etc.. A freaking train wreck!! 3-9! 3-9! Disastrous!! Yet CW held on to the Number 1 recruiting class in the whole freakin' Country!! Incredible.

Let's move on.

2008. Experts said 6-6/7-5. I said openly on this exact board, 8-4. We played 2 lousy games and truly competitive in the rest. Yes, we've given up 3 second half leads. No killer instinct. Didn't stay on the throttle. Well, looks like the experts were right. Not that we should have lost to the teams that we lost to but they were right none the less. (Almost) end of 2008, we doubled our win total from last year. Didn't look near as incompetent as last year. And we're going to a Bowl game that we could possibly win. Look at the numbers, the stats. We are identical to 2004 in 2008, Brady's class 2nd year, Jimmy's class 2nd year. Marked improvement from 2007.

Hey! I'm not saying that CW will take us back to the elites but if you take history as evidence of probability, we should improve in Jimmy's class 3rd year as we improved Brady's class 3rd year. THAT MY FRIENDS IS WHY I, FOR ONE, AM STAYING ON THE CHARLIE WEIS BANDWAGON FOR AT LEAST ONE MORE SEASON! Yes, losing sucks! Losing to 'Cuse SUCKS! But, don't throw out the baby with the bathwater, step back and see the forest instead of the individual trees.

Brady Quinns class:
Season1, bad
Season2, bad
Season3, BCS bowl

Jimmy's class:
Season1, bad
Season2, BOWL

Should we expect a BCS bowl in his season 3? I do! Next year 9-3? Hell yea I'd be happy with that!! And don't say, "well we better, our schedule is much easier" because as we witnessed this year, Notre Dame can schedule Penn High School and they will come out against Notre Dame with superhuman effort as every other team does that plays us. (And don't say that they don't just because we are down! 'Cuse's head coach just said it. He said beating Notre Dame IS special!) Doesn't it seem funny that we played the good teams on our schedule this year better than we played the bad ones? Of course we played Michigan hard because we didn't know just how crappy they were going to be so we played them as the Michigan team we've all come to know and hate, a damned good football team.

Summation, We saw how the team started this year. Hell, I was as caught up in it as everyone else. We thought Jimmy's class 2nd year was shaping up to be Brady's class 3rd year. Guess what?! Other than a few bad calls, just a few that didn't go "our" way, it almost was!! I don't want to hear how 'Cuse's true freshman ran against us or Pryor's getting it done as a freshman! Make ALL their skill players freshmen and sophomores and see how'd they do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes Virginia, there IS a Santa Clause, Yes ND Fans, we still have a good head coach. It takes time and I will say,

2009, time is up! BCS or bust. It's logical and natural.

This is what I believe and no, "Did you see that terrible call", "He just can't develop players", "He doesn't fire the team up" etc. etc. etc. is going to change my mind.

Notre Dame was built on faith. Time to man-up and show alittle!

Speedster:

you are one of my favorite posters over on DD...and i think you have a good perspective on ND. But the loss yesterday, taken by itself, is a clear example of a team that is not led by a proper leader. sam young said it best when he freely admitted that Syracuse wanted to win more. It is clear to me that Weis does not understand how to properly coach a college football team. We all get so focused and obsessed with the recruiting. I did myself. But top 5 recruiting classes are the norm at notre dame, weis has not done anything special in that regard (i do give him credit for turning the recruiting around from the worst classes we had seen at notre dame). I wanted him to succeed so badly as did every other fellow alumni...but he isn't the guy.

Good post. However...
I'll be satisfied when a semblance of a running game returns, and our OL acts like they actually are upperclassmen.
Unless that changes, 2009 will not be much better. Fix the problems quickly, CW....or exit stage left.

Great post, well thought out and written. However, I disagree completely. Charlie Weis has done as bad of a job coaching this team as Bob Davie and Tyrone Willingham. The proof is in the record and the stats. People can hold on to as much hope and faith as they like, I prefer to look at the reality. This team is horrible (not 3-9 horrible, but horrible) and this coaching regime has done little to instill confidence in me that it is heading in the right direction. When I look around, all I see are excuses.

"We don't have the talent!"
"It isn't fully cooked yet"
"Wait till next year!"
"Give him time"

Well, it's been four years and while he has shown some success and some flashes of greatness, the fact remains we have done no better under him than Davie and Willingham (remember, they showed those flashes too). Their results were not tolerated, why should Charlie's be? We have no more bowl wins than those two gentlemen provided us. No more National Championships or Heisman trophy winners. We have no more quality wins over legitimate Top 25 teams than those two coaches. The proof is in the pudding and regardless of how much hope and faith you have, it's there in black and white. Either we hire a coach that can help us live for today or we can constantly pine for "tomorrow" and what "might be". Personally, I'll take the results now, please.

Sorry I cannot agree with the original post. We are looking at a coach who has lost this team. He does not motivate them and lacks the creativity needed in the college game. Reality is that we just played one of the worst teams in football on ND senior day and looked like the walking dead. Charlie has had his chance, time to move on.

how can you really believe that we don't know where we are going right now and need to wait next year to find out? You are in a complete state of denial. I was too for longer than I should have been. I think a lot of us were. But the writing is on the wall now.

Wow. Coming from jonesman, I was forced to call some close friends and relatives to find out their thoughts.

I know that people jump on NDOM for his intense "I hope ND loses by 100" statements, but the reason I don't is because I have actually sat next to great people during past games who were not just hardcore fans, but live and breathe the promise that is ND, and they said they hoped ND lost by 100, because they were so disturbed TO THE CORE.

I'm just a fan of ND football. As a matter of fact, that is the only athletic team I follow. All my life.

Back to my point. Based on jonesman's assessment, I called up some other close people who live and breathe ND (not just the football team, and subway fans, but hardcore Roman Catholic). Their sentiment was the same as jonesman's.

Folks, based on my experience as a lifetime athlete, and having undergone a similar situation to what ND has been going through (albeit not on such a grand stage - peewee football ...) I still believe that next year is the year where we decide if ND is on the right track. I already think they are, but not enough people agree. That's OK.

Next year I judge CW hard, then go seek his puppies.

I had more than a few very positive reactions there and most of the negative posters would bitch if you hung them with an old rope so I don't take it too seriously.

Thanks for your input either way though.
