Ole Miss looks like a bunch of dopes for firing him.

They replaced him with that jag from SC who can recruit but can't coach for his life.

I've watched quite a bit of CF this year, and the best player I've seen is (and it kills me to say this) a Buckeye. But it's not Smith or Ginn... It's Laurinaitis.

In every O$U game I've seen this year, he's been the best player on the field. I also think AJ Hawk deserved a trip to NY last year.

Any pundiot (= pundit + idiot) can go on line an find a bunch of sporty stats on the Matt Leinarts and Troy Smiths of the world. To identify the best defenders, you actually have to watch the games.

There is not a chance in Coral Gab...I mean hell....that the world of college football has enough outside of the box brainpower to give the Heisman Trophy to a defender that doesn't play double duty on offense (Chuck Woodson).

That Elvis kid from Louisville had 20 sacks last year and his name wasn't even a spit stain on the radar screen.

Man, the day someone from the defensive side of the ball wins the Heisman I will weep tears of joy and begin to have faith in sports again.

I agree. Little Animal is the real deal. He has had just as big of an impact for OSU as anyone else has, including Smith.

Laurinatus is good, there's no denying that. But I also think he's a paper-tiger.

I mean, everyone's heard what Lou has had to say about his interceptions stat. And I really don't notice him in the big games...other than his INTs, of course. He's a plague-infected, poor, homeless man's AJ Hawk.

People said his dad was a plague-infected, poor, homeless man's Road Warrior Hawk. I never agreed with that.

He needs the spike shoulder pads. Impaling a few people may get him the Heisman...or at least the All-MAdden team.

the guy that is making Troy Smith good is that Gonzalez receiver. Guy catches everything thrown his way that he can get his hands on and is tough to bring down after the catch. If anyone on OSU derserves Heisman talk, it is him.

BLASPHEMY! Everyone in C-Bus knows that they owe everything to Troy Smith & Ted Ginn! Pittman? Gonzalez? Oh, no sir. Troy and Ginn have scored every touchdown, gained every yard and stopped every opponent's offense (even though they don't play defense). Saying anything to contradict that is pure blasphemy.

Well, it's been almost ten years now, so my memory may be playing tricks, but I'd say Woodson's Heisman was 80% for being the leader of a historically dominant defense, 20% for punt returns and WR play. I don't remember him scoring more than a couple of TDs as a WR.

Maybe McSweatervest can draw up some plays for Laurinaitis at FB or TE, let him score a few TDs and get on Sports Center.

You're right, it's sad. Defense wins championships, but defenders never win Heismans.

Its not even just Defenders that don't win Heismans. Other than Quarterbacks no one does. Sure they'll throw in the odd RB every 5 years or so *cough Ron Dayne cough* but other than that they should really just call it the BEST QB award.

Dude, you're awesome.

I'm not getting into Woodson and his Heisman again. He played in all three facets of the game.

I want to see a guy win that plays defense. No special teams, no offense.

It is a QB award and every so often an RB sneaks in there. You'll never see a WR win it again.

5 of last 6 by QBs, but only 11 of last 20. Breakdown all-time:

Winners by position

Halfback or Running Back 41
Quarterback 22
Fullback 2
End 2
Wide Receiver 2
Quarterback/Halfback 1
Defensive Back 1

You have highlighted the reason why I don't care if Quinn gets it or not. The award is cheap now. They would never give it to a QB on a losing team. Nor a Defensive player. Nor a WR.

The award is NOT about the best player in College Ball, etc...it's about the most above average player on one of the top10 teams.

It's sad, but I honestly have little respect for that award anymore...it's lame.

don't forget that it is now more of a career award than it is a single season award.
