Is a track star and led his team to a Catholic Division title. However, since he is not from Florida it is impossible to consider him SEC 'fast.' He is merely Midwest fast, which is much slower, or something like that, apparently:

For the final time, the Detroit DePorres boys track and field athletes can call themselves Catholic League champions.

DePorres, steeped in athletic tradition, will close at the end of this school year. On Wednesday at Livonia Ladywood, DePorres added a bit more to its legacy, winning the team title at the C-D Catholic League finals.

"It is bittersweet," DePorres coach Tony Taylor said of the victory. "At the beginning of the year, some kids quit the team after that situation. They thought, 'What's the point, the school won't be here next year.' So I'm very proud of the guys who stuck it out."

Ann Arbor Richard won the girls title in its second year in the league behind a strong showing in the distance events.

Center Line St. Clement, Detroit Dominican, Detroit East Catholic, Harper Woods Trinity Catholic and Holy Redeemer also made their final championship appearances. All will close next year because of cutbacks.

DePorres won the boys meet with 180 points. Runner-up Riverview Richard had 104 and Holy Redeemer finished third with 73.

DePorres took first, second, seventh and eighth in the 100-meter dash, good for 21 points. The Eagles also went first and third in the shot put. After those two early events, DePorres was never in danger of falling into second.

"Our field events really surprised me," Taylor said. "We did well in the high jump (second and third), too. If we had gotten six points in those events, I would have been happy."

Junior Anthony Bowman took first place in the 100- and 200-meter dashes (10.68 and 21.95 seconds) and ran on the winning 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays. DePorres sophomore Robert Daoud took the 1,600 and 800.

Senior David Grimes won the 400-meter dash (50.98) and ran on the winning 4 x 200 and 4 x 100 relays. He was runner-up in the 100.

"We just wanted to go out on top," Grimes said. "Our goals were to win the division title, which we did last week, to win the Catholic League title, which we did today, and to win states."

It was DePorres' third straight and 11th overall C-D title.

In the girls meet, Ann Arbor Richard won with 143 points. St. Clement had 101 for second and Riverview Richard finished third with 98.

Junior Mary Wagner led Ann Arbor Richard, taking first in the 1,600 (5:57.6), 800 (2:39.5), 3,200 (13:11.8) and the 4 x 800 relay.

Richard placed four runners in the top six of the 3,200 and took first and second in the 800 and 1,600.

"Whenever we see anyone in front of us, we just try to get in front of them," Wagner said. "It was a whole team effort."

St. Clement sophomore Valerie Watkins took four first-place finishes. She won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, the long jump and ran anchor on the winning 4 x 200 relay.

Other multiple event winners included Harper Woods Trinity senior Annica Brown in the shot put and discus and Trinity senior Krystle Wilson in the 100 and 200.
