Getting 5 years and $55 million?!?????? Are you kidding me? I've got a bucket of paint that's been sitting in the garage for the past 5 years that's been more productive than freaking GIL MECHE.

Where the hell is Walsh's avatar...my head is starting to hurt.

That is just insane, but I guess when a team hasn't had much success they have to overpay a player. 11 mil a year for a 55-44 record and a 4.65 ERA, Zito just became that much richer.

Yeah, the Cubs offered 50, but figured he was to talented to waste the rest of his career at Wrigley.

makes no sense. this is a team that needs to re-invest and start building from the ground up in order to compete again. taking on this much money for a guy who is a middle of the road starter at best is suicide unless they plan to flip him and trade him to a bigger team that needs depth later down the road for some prospects. meche has shown flashes of brilliance but he is real streaky and its always followed by something abismal. makes no sense at all.

Royals signed Dotel to be the closer this year for 7 million. He still hasn't proven he's fully recovered from his injury.

There will be a strike in a few years if this keeps up, its just too much money..

Makes you think; with the insane amount of money being spent on ordinary pitchers and the length of the average NFL career if Jeff Samardzija should play baseball full time and give up football.

You don't even have to be good to pull down eight figures in MLB.

Ted Lilly is a .500 pitcher and has never thrown 200 innings in a season. Gil Meche? Total headcase as I understand it from some Mariner fans.

Oakland will still win without Hudson, Mulder and Zito because Billy Beane is a genius.

I remember a few years ago when Detriot signed Pudge...I was like why in the hell is he going there.....Seems like in baseball with the wildcard teams and free agency teams can go from last to first pretty fast. In this case however I think Meche is just going for the money because I don't think KC will be going to the playoffs anytime soon especially being in the AL

Yes being a diehard Royals fan I can't tell you how excited we were that we are actually doing something in the offseason. No doubt that we overpaid to get Meche. But we just want to be good or just mediocore as far as that goes.
