If you were a quarterback going to Notre Dame would you jump at the chance to red shirt in order to spend five years with Charlie Weis.?
Either Zack Frazer or Demetrius Jones can do no better then third on the depth chart, so why not red shirt for the 2006 / 2007 season to maintain a year of eligibility for the 2010 / 2011 season.
Based on Jimmy Clausen’s above average age (I think he'll be 23 years old his junior year in college), his stated desire to be an NFL quarterback and the possibility that if he is as good as advertised he could be the starter his freshman, sophomore and junior year there is a chance that he could forgo his senior year for the NFL Draft.
Than the starting qb spot could be left to the one who red shirts and a QB from the 2008 class for the 2010 / 2011 season.
I realize plans change and to project what high school player are going to be like in three to five years is not an exact science but I don’t doubt for a minute that the brain trusts of Notre Dame Football have a best case scenario QB for the foreseeable future because Charlie Wies doesnt want to win a National Championship, he wants to win multiple National Championships.
