The fire started around 1 AM local time. A CNN reporter claimed the fire started on the 4th floor and rapidly burned upwards. Earlier reports had the fire starting on upper floors and quickly working downward which doesn't seem likely.
6 dead so far, 50 in hospital. The dead toll is going to rise. The building has 130 apartments with 500 residents. It's unknown if all were able to evacuate the building. No tally of those safe has been revealed.
It was built in the mid-70's and is reported to have NO sprinklers and NO fire stairways. The exterior of the building was recently renovated adding an outer skin. This is some speculation that the skin backing material may have added the upward spread of the fire.
London's fire department had 40 engines and 200 firefighters battling the blaze for more than 10 hours. There are horrific clips of the building burning. A structural engineer was assisting the firefighters to determine the structural stability and safety for the firefighters.
There has been no press conference updates mostly eye witness accounts. No none cause at this time. For that reason I started a new thread rather than add it to the London terror thread.
IF this wasn't terrorist arson it now creates a new soft target as this type of construction, no sprinklers, fire stairways, etc, is supposed to be typical in the area and all the fire brigade is try and evacuate residents under difficult conditions. It took 4-5 hours to get the fire under control. The first engines were on site in 6-8 minutes.
