Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire.

Favre
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that according to Favre's agent, Buss Cook, Favre informed Packers coach Mike McCarthy of his decision Monday night.

Foxsports.com first reported Favre's decision.

A sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Famer, Favre, acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons, led the Packers back to the NFL's elite. He retires with 5,377 carrer completions in 8,758 attempts for 61,655 yards, 442 touchdowns and 288 interceptions.

Cook said as of Tuesday morning, there were no plans for Favre to hold a news conference.

Favre, who returned for the 2007 season when many thought he should have left the game, had a career renaissance in his final season and led the Packers to the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants in overtime.

Mortensen reported that Favre, who wanted the Packers to obtain Randy Moss when he was a free agent last season, had once again pushed for Moss to join the Packers. Favre had spoken to Moss late last week and was willing to commit to more than just this season if Moss and the Packers could come to an agreement. But the Packers did not pursue Moss, who re-signed with the Patriots on Monday.

ESPN NFL reporter Chris Mortensen contributed to this story.

I know its announced by a major news source, but its gonna take a while for me to believe it. i will expect over the next few days to hear that it is not official, and that Bret will decide after the draft. I am such a pessimist today!

I posted this elsewhere as well.

He will go down in history as one of the best quarterbacks to play the game. Not the best but he'll be high on the list for a long time to come. What a great career he had, I think Favre was a class act as well, Too bad everyone in the NFL isn't more like him. He's a guy a kid can look up to and say "man I want to be Brett Favre one day". I was really hoping he would make it to the Super bowl this year but oh well. (standing ovation to Favre)

He was definately someone you would root for unless he was playing against your team. Have a good retirement Brett.

It is a very sad day for me, but i am happy for a man that has given me more memories than I can recall. Truely one of the greatest to play the game and always will be #1 in my heart. Glad i was able to watch this amazing man's career for as long as i could.

Listening to alot of talk about Favre last 2 days and the biggest thing that I hear over and over is that most people who liked him did so because of the way he played the game. With visible joy and a kid-like love of just playing. And this from fans of the game, not GB.

Like more than 99% of people who never made it to his level, We can only remember of how much fun it was to play in the park, on the corner lot or in the backyard with our friends and how much we would give and how much we would appreciate the game if we got to that level. Brett Favre played like that- the appreciation and respect and love of the game we have.

1st vote unanimous HOF.
