The Era of Ara

The Era of Ara

ARA.

He has dignity and class. He always had his players (and his play calling) adapt in preparing for a game and even switch gears in the middle of a game. He was always a "cool" head.

Weis and Holtz always ask(ed) him for advice. That alone speaks volumes!

Well, I'm prpbably giving my age away here but as much as I love Lou, I'd have to pick Ara. Football around here was in a rut. He brought so much intensity and excitement to the game. Thanks to Ara bringing the Irish back to respectability, the Notre Dame powers-that-be finally agreed to go to bowl games. I used to work in downtown South Bend and several times Ara stopped by our store to shop. He was so nice and down to earth.

Leahy was one of the greatest coaches that ever lived. I had the opportunity to watch his great teams after the war. He had absolutely great players, which may have helped make him a great coach. He was emotional and he was great with the x's and o's. He put so much into his coaching that he almost killed himself and ultimately had to retiure.

Ara holds a close second place. He brought the program back from the ashes.

Weis' place among the great ND coaches is still a work in progress. His first two years have been big turn-around years. He still needs to prove he can win the BIG games and win them on a consistent basis. Then he will take his place with the great ones.
