This kid's only offer is from Rutgers....RUTGERS!!

The guy is a stud. Plays multiple positions....QB, RB, KR, LB and safety. Seems to be better suited at safety or linebacker. A Jersey kid.

He is probably the best safety in America. I'm curious as to why he only has one offer from Rutgers, of all places. ND is sending him mail and he says he wants to camp at USC and FSU.

Apparently BC likes him but won't offer because of academic issues.

Makes sense why Notre Dame hasn't entered the picture.

I like this kid on the field for sure.

Scout lists him as 3-star.

They also have writers that are in dire need of the Hooked On Phonics series.

Doesn't really matter to me how many stars he has. I'm sure Rivals will give him three too. He was in their pre-evaluation Top 100 then didn't make the top 250.

I'd put him in my top 5 safety list pretty easy.

Don't live and die by Scout or Rivals star ratings. For every five star bust there is a three star stud (i.e. A.J. Hawk and Bobby Carpenter). Both were three star players out of high school. Darius Walker was also a three star RB by Rivals.

I agree that the rankings are not always right...no doubt there. However, Jigga said he might be the best Safety in the country. Ummmm...that's a big statement for a 3-star. Even if the rankings are wrong.

Carpenter and Hawk proved them wrong.

Walker proved them right. (he's a solid 3 star...)

Shark was a 3-star & the 43rd best WR in his class according to Scout. He turned out okay... ;)

It's best to leave the evaluations to the true experts (ie- Weis & Staff, not some chump writers for Scout, Rivals, etc.)

Agreed...and he is not on Weis' list from what I have been seeing. (guesses in many cases)

You really think Walker is a three star?

Without question.

The only people who don't are almost always ND fans.

If he were faster and could break away, then I would give him 4.

This year he will have to prove a lot. If he keeps on never breaking away, he will not be the #1 guy in the future. Aldrige or Prince could beat him for the spot.

Conversely, if he pulls a Julius Jones and just blossoms he will be the man and will go to the NFL on the first day.

Currently, he will not.

He's not an elite 5* type, but he is far better than you seem to give him credit for. Vision, agility, strength, blocking, receiving and a simple knack for getting yards are as important for a running back as break away speed. Emmit Smith ran about a 4.6 if I'm not mistaken.

Darius almost single handedly beat UM in 04 and was the lone bright spot against Ohio St. in the Fiesta Bowl. He actually had a very good game. He was solid all year and put up over 1,000 yards while adding a great receiving dimension and saving Quinn's scalp on a number occassions on blitz protection.

He churns out yards and keeps the chains moving. He rarely loses yards. Anybody who judges him based on break away speed is not looking at him with legitimate football knowledge in mind. They are looking for a video game player.

And if you think one of those freshmen are going to flat out beat him for a starting role, you're nuts. He is the perfect back for this system.

I am not bagging on him. I said he's a solid 3 star. That's not bad at all. But if Julius Jones was a 4 star...Walker is clearly a 3.

Now, as he gets older he could well move himself up...but he must improve.

You mentioned his blocking. That is actually his best charactaristic overall. This is one of the most widely underrated values for a RB. For instance, Julius Jones was a bad blocker. He would get run over.

Walker is an amazing blocker for such a little guy. In fact, if you watch the ND-DVD (Oldie Olderson's) you will see Walker just blowing up some people...it's really quite impressive.

In the end, I am not looking for a video game player. I am looking for a RB that can hit a hole and be a threat running downfield. That is not Walker. The CBs downfield can be confident that they will rarely have to move up to cover him...he will be caught from behind.

I would much prefer someone who makes the whole defense nervous...someone who has the speed to hit a hole and go 80 yards. JJ was the last guy we had like that.

Here's a comparison...who does Walker look like most? (Hint: not Jones or Denson...both 4-stars) Don't forget to take into account how good or bad these teams were...that makes it even more interesting.

It was a statement from April, too.

Wouldn't worry about young Evan much in regards to ND. He doesn't have the grades.

I forgot to mention his hands...he has VERY good hands.

I see no Freshman beating him for the role this year.

2008...all bets are off. Weis will put in the best man.

2007, the freshman are too green.

Justin Hoskins 5.7 5-11/190/4.4 Grand Rapids, MI 16 Notre Dame
Darius Walker 5.7 5-11/197/4.45 Buford, GA 18 Notre Dame
Thomas Brown 6.0 5-10/185/4.4 Tucker, GA 4 Georgia

Here are all of the offered players ahead of Darius Walker that year. I know who Thomas Brown is.

1 Adrian Peterson 6.1 6-2/210 Palestine (TX) Oklahoma
2 Marshawn Lynch 6.0 5-11/195 Oakland (CA) Technical California
3 Bobby Washington 6.0 6-0/200 Miami (FL) Killian Miami-FL
4 Thomas Brown 6.0 5-10/185 Tucker (GA) Tucker Georgia
5 Charlie Jones 6.0 5-11/200 Homestead (FL) South Dade Miami-FL
6 D.J. Wolfe 6.0 5-11/180 Lawton (OK) Eisenhower Oklahoma
7 Jamaal Edwards 6.0 6-0/202 Greensboro (NC) Dudley Florida State
8 Tony Temple 5.9 5-10/192 Kansas City (MO) Rockhurst Missouri
9 Andrew Johnson 5.9 6-0/205 Pittsburgh (PA) North Hills Miami-FL
10 Andre Brown 5.9 6-1/210 Greenville (NC) Rose NC State
11 Markus Manson 5.8 6-0/190 Tuscaloosa (AL) Hillcrest Florida
12 George Bell 5.8 5-11/225 Fayetteville (NC) Jack Britt Virginia Tech
13 Tony Pittman 5.8 5-11/195 Akron (OH) Buchtel Ohio State
14 Kenny Wilson 5.8 6-2/215 Liberal (KS) Junior College
15 Max Martin 5.8 6-2/210 Madison (AL) Bob Jones Michigan
16 Justin Hoskins 5.7 5-11/190 Grand Rapids (MI) Creston Notre Dame
17 Brandon Jackson 5.7 6-0/220 Horn Lake (MS) Nebraska

These are the 17 young men rated ahead of Walker nationally. We all know who number one is and I'm sure everyone remembers Pittman from the Fiesta Bowl. The Lynch kid from Cal is a good player.

Yep, Darius Walker.

If that's him yes. I give him a 75% chance of holding the job. He will be bigger, stronger, and more experienced.

Aldridge will either play some in 2006 or 2007. If he is all-that-and-a-bag-of-chips, then he will move ahead. (not many RBs get 5 stars)

However, Aldridge (or Prince) will have to PROVE they are the better man for the job.

There is no guarantee and no magic pill...it will be about hard work and talent.

I don't care who wins it...I care that the best man plays the most.

Here are the players that year who were picked ahead of him. Most of them are buried under an upperclassman... ND of course does not have that depth...so Walker has been the go-to guy for a while.

Peterson 220att; 1108yds; 5.0avg [was not healthy]
Lynch 196att; 1246yds; 6.4avg
Washington - transfered to NC State
Brown 147att; 736yds; 5.0avg
C.Jones 123att; 507yds; 4.1avg
Wolfe - D-Back now
J.Edwards - not playing, behind Booker
Tony Temple - 81att; 437yds; 5.4avg [was not healthy]
Johnson - 14att; 97yds; 6.9avg
Brown - 129att; 667yds; 5.2avg
Manson - 81att; 365yds; 4.5avg
Bell - 42att; 192yds; 4.6avg
Pittman - 243att; 1331yds; 5.5avg
Martin - 53att; 226yds; 4.3avg [buried under Hart, moved to 'Bama]
Hoskins- transfer
Jackson - 3rd or so...getting few carries
