Duval Kamara to TE?

from the SB Tribune

Another personnel move Weis and his coaching staff bandied about Sunday was the possibility of moving wide receiver Duval Kamara to the depleted tight end position.

Suspended junior Will Yeatman figures to have some sort of resolution in his situation this week, stemming from a Sept. 21 arrest for underage drinking. Junior Luke Schmidt is out indefinitely with headaches resulting from a blow to the head suffered Sept. 20 in ND's loss at Michigan State. Schmidt has a history of concussions. Sophomore Mike Ragone is out for the season following August knee surgery.

That leaves freshman Kyle Rudolph as the ironman, though undersized freshman Joseph Fauria (6-7, 245) is available in an emergency situation.

"We talked about (Kamara) when we had all these situations taking place," Weis said of the 6-5, 219-pounder, who has been sliding down the wide receiver depth chart as of late. "We talked about that, because he certainly would like to eat himself into being a tight end.

"But it's totally different having to put your hand down on the ground, being in a three-point stance, having a defensive end in your face right now. Now, Duval is a very good blocker. But it's totally different when you're doing it in a stance at the point of attack with a guy that outweighs you by 50 or 60 pounds than when you're going in and blocking safeties and corners."

Fauria is "undersized" at 6-7 245, but Kamara is only 6-5 219. What's wrong with this picture?

Yeah, but weight from dining hall food isn't going to help him against said DE's.

I think it could work, if he wants to continue to see the field. He has suspect hands. Maybe he can make this work. I will be rooting for him. I wish him all the success! Good luck Duval!

The only logic that I can get out of this is ... one is considered a good blocker at this stage (Kamara) and one isn't (Fauria). Plus, do you think that Charlie would like to see Fauria keep that extra year of eligibility as he grows into the appropriate size and gaining more (practice) experience?

VERY good point! Kamara would have to spend a year putting on weight just to catch the "undersized" Freshman but a hybrid TE would work!

He might good blocking DBs, but how about DEs? Big difference!

i think 240 would be big enough, he would just add another dimension to an already fully loaded offense, if he could keep his speed. that would make two TE sets more like a 4 wide set with rudolph and kamara, that would be hell for opposing DC's

i would guess that he would have to have Schwapp back there to pick up anything that gets by him until he got good enough at it.

From what I gathered about Weis comments is that this isn't an option, it WAS something they considered but highly unlikely, fwiw

right. this is most likely NOT happening. it was one of those things you just throw out as being in the realm of possibilities, but ultimately not likely.

I still like the Trevor Robinson option at TE. He really seems to move well for such a big guy and he has absolutely laid opponents out when he gets under a full head of steam. He is a beast on a full run!

As proud president of Trevor Robinson's fan club (Denver chapter), I'd have to say I agree... and if you want to get it on 4th and 1, run behind Trob baby!

i'm just afraid he would let the ball go because he would be over-anxious to hit someone.

Trevor could play wide receiver, TE, and guard at the same time.

When we pick up another 4-star WR this year, the option of TE for Kamara becomes more realistic and practical. I think he will gladly put on 20-25 pounds to see the field more often than he is now. It will be a win-win situation for both ND and Kamara.

After this year I don't think the minutes are there for him. If Ragone comes back near 100 percent and Rudolph continues to develop I think those are your top two guys. Fauria just needs a year to add 10 pounds or so and then he will be in the mix, so you already have 3 guys that actually played the position at some point battling for time next year. I think DK's opportunity is at WR and his window of opportunity is getting smaller each week. Somebody buy that boy some stickum!!!!!

Besides, DK's biggest problems are the droppsy's and being a lazy route runner, at what point does a position change make any of that disappear?

The way I think they were talking about it was in response to using Kamara right now as TE, but that was to save the redshirt for Fauria if they could. Next season it would not make sense, with Ragone, Rudolph and Fauria, along w Eifert and Golic as the 2 new freshmen. The reason they did not explore that any more is because it would not be very fair to stick Kamara against those guys on the line w a hand down who out weigh him by 50 + lbs.

I think they will try to get by w possibly Yeatman coming back and Schmidt getting cleared for play. ????

I don't like the idea. This guy is a young player with confidence issues already, now you want to tell him to go out there and block down on defensive ends? I think it would spell the end of his career. Just my opinion. I have not given up on him as a wide receiver. It took Golden a while to learn the position and no one is doubting him now. Maybe this kid is just not as fast a learner. His future is at WR and he needs to make the most of it. He has size, speed and ability. He just needs confidence. If he gets that back he will be a dangerous WR.

Paul Duncan should get some reps in at TE, at minimal he can be put in a 2 TE set for blocking purposes, I have not seen him on the field up to this point.

Good point. The line could use a speedy and agile blocker. He could slip under the DE and knock out his kneecaps in a flash. His mere presence at TE would change the opposing DC's gameplan.

Or maybe I am hallucinating. I am off today and popped open a cold one two hours ago.

Guys, the main reason he won't be a TE in the Winslow mold (or any mold for that matter) is because HE CAN'T CATCH! Just go back to the first play of last Saturday's game. Clausen threw an absolute BB to Rudolph, in between 2 defenders, and Rudolph caught in w/out problem. Same thing on the TD pass to Rudolph. If Kamara ain't catching fades and slants, no way is he going to catch what Rudolph is catching. He's too small to be a great blocker there, so if the main reason for him to be a TE is for his receiving skills, then it's a moot point because right now, HE CAN'T CATCH.

I hope he improves as a receiver. This TE nonsense will never happen IMO. Now, if he gains 30 pounds and suddenly can catch, I'll change my tune. But right now, I ain't buying it at all...

yeah this is what i think, too. kamara had some weight issues at the beginning of the season and i think this is just another way to try to get him motivated.
