Demetrius Jones

Preemptive Strike:

There are reports being kicked around on other boards that James Alderidge said on Fox28 (Fox in the SBI) that he spoke with Jones, and that he had committed.

Everybody else on those boards is saying this is not true, or that there is a nuance to this, and that Jones has not yet committed.

I would be curious to know what's up, but until I hear something official, I have to say Jones hasn't committed.

Jones did not commit. He told Aldridge ND is at the top of his list and they thought it would be cool to play together. Blueandgold.com has the story.

Jones HAS NOT committed to ND verbally or in any other manner....yet. Aldridge's pledge is a plus, but Frazer's is not, obviously. Weis has offers out to Tyler Lyon and Mitch Mustain at QB as well. Jones could probably start at Illinois next year. He is not ready to decide just yet.

Jones now says he is "opening back up" and will not name a leader at this time or put any schools in any order. Jones is thinking about going to the one day camps at Notre Dame, Minnesota, Illinois and Ohio State.

I'm somewhat inclined to side with the NDNation boys on this one. From what I can gather, I think this Hare fellow harassing Jones about Alderidge's words might have hurt us, or changed the order of events as they were to unfold. Could you imagine if a so-called recruiting guru called your house everytime some other kid opened his mouth?

I'd like to be optimistic and say this will have no bearing on Jones's decision making. Jones hopefully understands that overbearing douche bags (Hare) come with the territory of being a top recruit out of highschool. Its the price to pay.

He currently likes ND, Illinois, Tennessee and Louisville. The logical choice is Illinois and that is where he's going. ND has Frazer, Vols have Ainge and Louisville has Brohm. Jones could start for Illinois...this fall as a HS senior. It makes the most sense and that is what is going to happen.

Today, most kids dream of playing in the NFL. I coached in the NFL for 15 years. If our recruits are good enough, I should have a clue about showing them how to get there

The last line of that article says it all right there.

I read this today when I picked up the paper. Jones and Frazer would be almost too good to be true. You have to think if ND gets them both, one will transfer at some point. Add Bragg and Sharpley into the mix, ND could have some decent depth at QB.

I'd love to see Jones go to ND and I'm surprised he's showing as much interest as he is, but Illinois would be a perfect fit. Zook will put that crazy offense in and give this kid the keys to the engine right away.

But I hope he goes to South Bend just for the hell of it.

If memory serves...Wasn't Leinert's backup just drafted in the NFL!!!! Having two good QB's is amust these days! Under Weis and Cutliffe both of these kids could be drafted!

I'm not going to put too much stock into that pick. That kid won't see the field. Having two good QBs in the same class usually equals transfer. I'd love to see ND get both Frazer and Jones, but you have to think that Jones going to Illinois would make more sense in terms of playing time and reps.

But he loves ND and doesn't mind the competition. I think the guy that would develop into the better player is Jones, but Frazer seems more college football ready right now.

Frazer and Jones could split duties. That would confuse the hell out of opposing teams. Plus Jones could play some wide receiver. Thats what I'd love to see, Frazer starting, Jones getting a few snaps a game to throw the other team off, and then going in as a wide receiver.

Weis is creative enough, and smart enough to try this....

When recruiting quarterbacks like that of Demetrius Jones, looking at him as a wide receiver is something I would do with extreme caution. Many will take offense and go somewhere else where they will be recruited and suited up as a quarterback.

Did they recruit Frazer to play tight end?

I can assure you Ron Zook is not looking for Jones to play receiver, defensive back or anything else. I don't know if Jones would be open to the idea, but this can backfire on coaches in recruiting more often than it works.

To be honest, I'm still shocked to be having this conversation. I thought Frazer's verbal equalled Jones going to U of I and losing interest in ND. I'll give the young man credit.

Eh, I positively detest 2 quarterback systems, I think they rarely work. Kinda hope Weis steers clear of that.

Someone always ends up unhappy and transfers. Depth is one thing, but split time or converting a guy to WR just doesn't seem plausible. Jones is a quarterback and a very good one. As a native of the state, I'm almost hoping that he goes to Illinois if he doesn't go to ND. It would make more sense.

Demetrius Jones's teammate Chris James committed to Illinois. DJ will probably follow. Definitely makes more sense at this point. Frazer seems to be more of a Weis type of QB anyway.

According to Tim O'Halloran of rivals.com, the Illini received their first oral commitment from a top prospect in the Class of 2006 last week when Morgan Park junior wide receiver Chris James called Zook and told him he is headed to Champaign.

O'Halloran has James rated the No. 4 recruit in the state behind quarterback and teammate Demetrius Jones, who is ranked No. 1; Jamie Cumbie, a 6-foot-7-inch, 255-pound Morris tight end rated No. 2, and Chicago Vocational quarterback Isiah Williams.

After receiving nearly 30 scholarship offers from schools such as Ohio State, Tennessee, Oregon, Purdue and Minnesota, James reportedly wound up choosing the Illini.

If Isiah Williams commits to Illinois first, Jones won't go there. If Ramone Johnson goes to Illinois, Jones will be all in. But Johnson could go to Tennessee, which would keep ND in the running.

James' commitment hurts ND's chances, but they're not out of it yet.

And Isiah Williams is an Illini. http://illinois.rivals.com/default.asp?SR=RivalsFP

Jones should be Notre Dame's for the taking now. Louisville has taken two great qb's (including Brohm) and Michigan is still a factor. Then there is Tennessee...which of these is not like the others?

This is very interesting now. Williams and Jones do not want to go to school together. Weis is recruiting two QBs and has one verbal already. Jones should act fast and verbal. His recruitment was been very stressful to him because of so many rumors. Everyone in Chicago is talking about him. With so many ND fans/alumni and Illinois fans/alumni in our city, the trash if being talked by those in the know. I think Notre Dame now has the edge.
