South Bend Tribune: Notre Dame football: Clay’s Smith on the comeback trail

Can there be an ND class without an injury prior to putting on a gold helmet. Probably but it doesn't seem that way.

Eric Hansen describes Smith's injury on a basketball court in February. (BGIF note: Daniel committed 1/26/09.) Smith had surery in mid-May to repair a torn meniscus and started rehab last week. He's expected to be fully recovered for his team's season opener in August. Currently he works out but doesn't run or catch. His coach says he'll wait to use him until he is 100%.

I read that this morning, and what his coach said stood out to me. His coach is a man that you want your kids to play for:

"Notre Dame is his future. Clay football is something he's doing until he gets there. When Daniel is 100 percent, we're going to use him. If he's not 100 percent, then we'll wait. He's got bigger things ahead of him, and you have to look out for the kid's best interests."

Kudos coach, you are unfortunately a rare breed...
