Thomas Jones is gone. They drafted Tiny 5-7 180lb Garrett Wolfe from No. Illinois. DW might have a good chance at making the team....

to be honest, as much as it sucked....i think it was his only option without doing worse. I mean, next year he would have probably not gotten as many snaps and draft status would have been worse. Theres been more tradgedies though...

How could his draft status be worse???

What? Were the teams going to piss in his cheerios before the draft?

Yeah, shoulda got the degree first. I'm glad he's gone, it would have been too crowded next year anyway. We watched crappy teams have big runs on us last year, and we did so very little of that. Onward and upward!

it would just be too crowded this year. He's already said he's going to get his degree during the offseason. His draft status could have gotten worse by him staying here. He went to the draft as 'the' running back for notre dame instead part of a ensemble that would be this year. His stats would be crap this year and it would only hurt him...at least this way he went out with high numbers

what I meant by it getting worse would be next years draft....he could have been projected later than he was this year b/c of the # of backs we have capable of playing

They have a kid named Adrian Peterson, from Georgia Southern, who is a great back that has never really gotten an opportunity. Bensen is the starter so look for DW and Peterson to battle it out for the roster spot.

He might make the team as a third down back, but he won't play much outside of that.
He should have stayed, I think that is agreed from everyone, even him now.

right, but with a young O-line.....darius wouldnt have gotten crap done. They're gonna need JA, TT, and some runners like that....all the dancing wont do any good this year. That was my point, he'd be great for swing passes & etc but no draws or dancing runs

Yeah...we also need a power runner...and he was not ready for that either.

It's going to be a tough year my friends...this was good turnover. It might rough the first few games...but I would bet you that by half-way through the season we will see something special. Something we have not seen in years.

I think we got a good balance of running and passing...YOUNG talent on the offensive side of the ball....defensively with two veterans at the safety postitions is going to look good....

SIGNED WITH THE BEARS?!
what do you guys think about this?

Maybe this is old news, but BGS says he didn't sign with them after all, at least not yet (link):

Darius Walker has not signed a free agent contract with the Chicago Bears yet -- or with any team, for that matter. Strange; the Bears' signing was previously reported by many sources, including the athletic department itself. A deal that was in place has apparently fallen apart, according to today's SBT.

A sidelight to the story was a quote from Jimmy Walker, Darius' dad, that was printed on Tuesday. Jeff Carroll of the SBT had interviewed Jimmy, who expressed surprise and disappointment at the fact that Darius wasn't drafted. In the article, Carroll raised the question of why Charlie hadn't appeared at Darius' pro announcement presser, and whether Charlie's prepared statement expressing "disappointment" meant anything more than simply that ND was sad to see him go. When asked whether he thought Charlie Weis had backed Darius enough in the draft process, Jimmy Walker replied, "I have no comment on it." This seemed, to me, a loaded answer (and a loaded question, for that matter), and it suggested that the Walkers (or Jimmy, at least) thought Charlie had something to do with Darius' draft day denouement.

In today's follow-up, Darius clarified his own sentiments:

Walker said that he believes ND coach Charlie Weis, though disappointed in his decision to exit early, supported him in discussions with NFL contacts. And he believes Rosenhaus, his agent, has been doing his best to represent his current interests.

I know disappointment is running pretty high in the Walker house right now, but there are, unfortunately, some legitimate football knocks against Darius that explain why he doesn't have a home in the NFL yet.

By the way, since he wasn't drafted, could Darius return to play another year at Notre Dame? According to the NCAA, players can declare for the draft and maintain eligibility under certain conditions:

Division I-A and I-AA football student-athletes are permitted to enter the NFL draft one time without jeopardizing eligibility in that sport, provided the student-athlete is not drafted by any team in that league and the student-athlete declares his intention to resume intercollegiate football participation within 72 hours after the NFL draft declaration date. Further, the 72-hour period begins at 12:01 a.m., after the NFL draft declaration deadline. This date is traditionally in mid-January.

In the above circumstance, the individual may not have an oral or written agreement with an agent or not received any benefits from an agent in order to return to or enroll in an NCAA institution.

So, by signing with an agent, Darius closed himself off from that option. Given his pre-draft assessments, I'm sure he didn't think he'd have to fall back on it, though.

Thoughts?

I thought that once you sign with an agent, your amateur status is gone. Isn't that what happened to Mike Williams. He was to young to become draft eligible...like Maurice Clarett while he was in the midst of legal action trying to buck the system? He signed with an agent and lost his eligibility even though he wasn't age ready for meet requirements.

Yes, that's right. I think that's what the BGS post says, though.

Having Rosenhuas as your agent is probably the worst thing D Walker did. Drew fed him a pile and he thought it was caviar and ate it all up. Hopefully he signs soon, since this report says he has yet to sign and he sticks with a team, he could be a valuable asset as a third down back, he can catch, has ok speed, and power (not great). Oh and he can block decent (again not great). He could have a productive career doing just that.
