Herbstreit reported on College Game Day that ND and CDub will announce a contract extension through 2015, SQUASHING CDub to NFL rumors.

Life is good.

Let's just get this out of the way now.

It's racism. They didn't give Ty a 10 year deal and he had a better record blah blah blah blah.

You'll hear it.

I am sick of this racism crap. If they are racist they would of never hired Ty. cdub is a better coach and he has prove that in the NFL with three rings. And he can recruit better than Ty and he has a better stuff. But on the other hand this might be a little soon. I mean we all thought Ty was the best, but look how he turn out. He sucked as a coach, we know that. Don't get me wrong I hope Cdub stays for ever and wins a lot of NC. Time will tell us what happens. GO IRISH!!

I say we give him a lifetime contract....

Considering his weight, age, medical history and stress at ND ...

Stay healthy Charlie!

Don't jump on the new guy or the Purdue fan here gang but does anyone else think this kind of a extension is a little premature?? I mean this years Irish team is for real and playing top notch ball but his first year isn't even over yet. JMO

Well, well, well....the Vatican locks up Prince Charles for the next decade. How the media wolves will feast on this. Welcome to our sports culture. 15 minutes of pleasure will get you a new contract within 15 seconds. I anticipate Ozzie Guillen going through some of the same negotiations here in Chicago.

Based on a 5-2 record and his recruiting pavement pounding, a ten year deal. Makes me believe that there must have been some credence to those NFL rumors, boys. I'd love to see the fine print on this one. Hopefully we'll get some tidbits as to what this all entails.

When Parshegian became ND's newest head coach an Irish fan came up to him and said, " We're with you Coach, win or tie!"

When Lou Holtz became head coach an Irish fan came up to him and said, "We're with you Coach, by the way you know there are no ties anymore!"

We're a tough crowd to please!

Excellence is a minimum requirement.

Is the extension early by most standards, yes.

But considering how we've wandered through the wilderness for the 8 years I've been expecting it since the Opening Day.

Last year the Boilermakers put the score of the ND game on their rings. They won't do that during Weis's career. Now go beat Penn St.

Meh. They extended Bob Davie's contract too. A year later, he was gone.

A 10-year contract isn't ever really a 10-year contract anymore. There's always clauses in there for early termination. See Ty Willingham. Hell, see half of pro sports.

Bottom line? This was a PR move, and a good one, actually. The media laps it up and reports things like "the NFL rumors for Charlie Weis are now over," the recruits are happy, and the idiots who started the rumor to hamper ND's recruiting get egg on their face. But make no mistake: if Charlie still wants an NFL job later, he can get out. And if (God forbid) Charlie bombs out, ND can still fire him.

wow I heard on ESPN that Weis' 10 year deal is worth around 30 to 40 million. If thats true he's the highest paid coach in college. If the NFL wants him they'll have to start the bidding at 5 million a year.

I thought the contract was simply a 5 extension of his prior 6 year, $2 mill per, contract at the same annual compensation.

So now we know why all those coaches voted ND so high in the poll today. "Thank you, Charlie for raising our pay grade!"

No - they canceled year 2 thru 6 of the existing contract and signed a new 10 year agreement.

Dan Patrick on ESPN Radio is trying to start a controversy over is it fair that they did that to a 6-2 Weis and not an 8-0 Ty.....will these guys ever let TY die (so to speak). The other item he is stirring up is that "if this is your dream job, why do you need this extension"........so esoteric....is he forgetting about recruiting etc......ok so Dan, since ESPN is your dream job, you will work here on a volunteer basis.....I really thought he was smarter than this.

The matter won't go away.

Take it from someone that hates discussing the previous coach more than brussel sprouts and trips to the dentist.

I think a National Title is the only thing that will end the debate...but it will have to happen in '06 or '07.

CW will need a better record than that of TW after three years AT LEAST.

CW is not Ty, I keep hearing ND haters saying well ty went 8-0 and he did not get an extension. What those small minds do not look at is the fact that even though Ty was 8-0 they were still in the 100's in offense and scoring. Ty won with forced opportunities by the defense and special teams. You cannot rely on that and expect to win National titles. Ty had this team and could not do as much with it - he had a better D based on experience. I live in Pennsylvania and for those of you who are unaware of this fact, but : Penn State fans are the biggest haters of ND, I have been around Mich fans, USC fans, Miami fans, BC fans and I can tell you this group has so much hate and envy in thier tone, it is hard to be around. I cannot tell you how many time I hear that ND get the "favoritism card" in the polls. Now that Penn State finally put together a decent season, they are comming down from the mountains to tell me about how PSU is better than ND. I cannot wait until next year.

This is not and should not be a Ty vs Charlie issue. ND Football is a business. The Chairman of the Board (Fr. Jenkins) and the CEO (White) protected their key asset - the President and Chief Operating Officer by the name of Charlie Weis. No favoritism - no racism. "Nothing personal - it was strictly business".

Again, we're talking about one color, one issue, one central way of life:

GREEN. Dead President Green.

Crayola should get on the case.

On all fronts, meaning ESPN, et.al., will keep the "Ty controversy" open as long as people will listen.

The man is guaranteed an era. Rockne, Leahy and Parseghian weren't, and Ty Willingham wasn't even given the chance. - HE'D BETTER WIN CONSISTENTLY & NOT BE A ONE YEAR WONDER- FOR FAVOR WILL TURN AGAINST HIM QUICKLY!

Loyalty is in such short supply in college football these days that plenty of coaches believe seeing through a five-year contract with a courtesy car thrown in is like stealing money. But over the weekend, the higher-ups at Notre Dame didn't just hand Charlie Weis a contract running through 2015; they opened the bank vault and warmed up the getaway car.

Hey, in all fairness to college football, a lot of these guys are carpet baggers and crooks.

Gary Barnett? Thank God he didn't suceed Holtz.

Urban Meyer? Used ND and wasted their time.

Jackie Sherrill? Crook everywhere he was.

Dennis Erickson? Scumbag.

These schools know what they're doing, but the coaches aren't dumb. There is no such thing as a dream job anymore. Those deals are few and far between. I think Jim Tressel has a place. I think Weis does too.
