Criticism of Weis' deal is bunk

Charlie Weis' new 10-year contract has come with plenty of criticism — all of it unwarranted. The extension isn't about racism. It's about capitalism. Weis was 5-2 in his first seven games at Notre Dame before getting the extension; former coach Tyrone Willingham started 8-0 and didn't get a similar deal. Willingham, though, wasn't in demand by the NFL as Weis was and will continue to be.

Other factors to consider: Notre Dame's leverage with NBC in its television contract and with Adidas in its apparel deal was diminishing because of the play of the Irish under Willingham. Once Weis leads the Irish to a BCS game this season — it's a lock to happen with wins against Navy, Syracuse and Stanford — that's $14 million in the coffers. Then watch how fast NBC tries to restructure its deal with the school. ...

There's no question.

Davie's failure and Ty's failure to pick up the pieces have resulted in this. Coaching and recruiting should no longer be an issue under Prince Charles. Notre Dame takes an NFL-type approach to games and I like that on the college level.

I was reading an on line article, proclaiming that ESPN wanted to schedule more Irish games on thier network. Last year, before the "firing" ESPN was inquiring about ND's interest in playing a Thursday night game. I never really heard any thing after that, because Ty was fired two weeks later, and ESPN started bashing the Irish. I know that there has been some problems between ND and NBC with the presentation of pre-game. I personally feel it is dry and kills any hype 10 minutes prior to the game. I do like the fact that ND is on every week, but there are way too many breaks.

To charge ND with racism is ludacrous. If there were any truth to it you would have to assume that they hired Willingham just to fire him.

The extension was given to stop the rumors and reassure recruits. They already had Weis under a 6 year contract. It was no big deal to extend it to 10.

All the other coaches should send him a big THANK YOU because they'll get a raise whether they deserve it or not. Extensions always come with a healthy raise and you can be sure that Bowden,Groh,Paterno, etc will be talking to the brass about their pay checks.
