After listening to Mike Frank on Irish Eyes Power Hour tonight, it seems as though DB coach Corwin Brown of the New York Jets is pratically a done deal as our new DC. Know I don't know much about him other than he's a young, african-american, but Mike sounded very excited about this hire. Says he's definately a high energy guy whose an up and comer. Take it for what it's worth.

As I said according to Irish Eyes Power Hour it's in the works. Mike Frank is usually very good with his sources. You can listen to a replay tomarrow.

Did this guy play at Michigan? I really have never heard of him. Also, what does lmao mean. I usually can figure these out but not this one.

I like the sounds of this. Young, lots of energy, hopefully attack minded, can relate to recruits, NFL experience, I like the staff Mangini has and think they did an excellent job this year.

Fingers crossed.

will a DB coach have what it takes to run an entire defense??? hopefully he'll do wonders with our secondary. i hope he's good, cuz he has a ton of work ahead of him.

Spart--TonyTiger is Frank's source. He's the expert on all things ND. He even runs his own ND site.

From what I gather, Brown worked under Parcells with Charlie at the Jets. He then coached DBs under Groh at Virginia and was said to have been one helluva recruiter. He is now with the Jets again under Mangini and looks to have done an admiral job with this years secondary. I'm guessing by now you are seeing his ties to Charlie and the people he's worked with. I say give the guy a chance. Sure we could possibly go after the bigger name guys like Pelini but what good will that do us if next year he bolts for a head job.

Based on the info at the Jets website, he is way to young for the job:

Position: Defensive Backs
Jets Seasons: 3
NFL Coaching seasons: 3
Birthday: 6-28-2006

At 6 months old, he is in no way ready to replace Minter....although there are some on here who seem like they would argue that point.

I was hoping we would get a young energetic coach. One who could communicate and relate with the young people.

Weis can teach, he just needs someone to come in and set the team on fire. Someone who is passionate and energetic.

From what I have heard, this guy fits the bill.

Well if this is truly the new DC, then I'm sure Coach Weis did his homework on him. That Weis and Mangini have history together would mean that he would get an honest opinion about this guy. Besides I would rather have a young energetic up and comer, then an old timer who's on his way to pasture.

Yeah hahaha the Jets main website is a joke. Last year after a game they put up a pic of Curtis Martin and Chad Pennington on the main page in the locker room. Only problem was it was clear as day that you could see about 6 naked players in the locker room. I was looking up tickets with my friend when we saw that, it was obvious but the Jets site is a joke. Funniest thing ever but they missed it. They had to put up a letter of apology. They have also had many other screwups.

As for Brown's coaching, I can tell you the Jets dback's were better than they have been in years. They didnt have much d-line help and they were in a new defensive system. However they played better than they ever did under the Herm era and this was without some of the best dbacks they had. I dont know if some of this can be attributed to Mangini since he coached D'backs in NE or Brown. However they did perform well. Id like Brown here.

Encouraging indeed. Anyone involved in turning around that sorry state of affairs is okay in my book. I'm sure my Jets will miss him, but I know where my priorities ultimately lie ...

If Corwin Brown is the new DC they should annouce it ASAP!!! I think he would make a HUGE impact in recruiting this year! We might actually land Ronald Johnson, Major Wright, and Michael McNeil. Right now I think we only have a slim chance with Wright...the rest we do not have a prayer. I like the idea of a young up and coming coach running our defense!!!! I hope this is not more BS....

I don't kniow if all this speculatyion is true. But after seeing this I did an online search. I think the guy would be a credible hire.

1. He played at Michigan, played in the NFL for 8 years, coached under Al Groh at UVA and is now the secondary coach for the NYJ. That's credible.

2. His NFL connection will instantly aid in recruiting. Think about him telling recruits about playing and coaching in the NFL and knowing what it takes to get there.

3. I don't think we would need to worry about him bouncing around and taking a HC job somewhere in the short term. That's also a postive for the program and a positive for recruiting.

4. He has expertise in the area that we need the most help, the secondary.

The big question is can he make the leap from postion coach to Coordinator? Wherease guys like Bunmpas and Pelini (and the others I listed) have a solid track record as DC's at the collegiate level, they all willprobably be short term hires if hired. They are all destined to be head coaches sooner rather than later.

I could see going either route.

This post will be a repeat if you read Domer Domain:

People were excited about the Ken Norton Jr. as DC rumors a few days ago. This guy has better experience than him. UCLA hired a young position coach this year, look what that did for their defense. Nebraska hired Bo Pellini as their DC a few years ago after he was only a position coach in the NFL. He had never called plays, either. How has he turned out?

Brown is coming from the marquee coaching tree in the NFL. Right now the Parcells coaching tree is spawning more success than the old Bill Walsh tree. This guy has played for and coached with some of the best.

He's young, aggressive and has a reputation for toughness. He has recruiting experience from UVA. He came out of the Chicago Public Leagues and could be the answer to Ron Zook in that area. Imagine having Tez in this class and a lock on Hughes. How much better would it look right now?

This seems like the jolt of energy that this program, especially the defense, needs right now. I think it's a good hire if true. I think the timing is better for an up and comer than for a guy on his way back down.

scoop i dont think we cna get martez after the huge deal he made of his UI commitment and how he's going to be the savior of the state. But it can't hurt with Filer next year and the future in the Chicago area in general.

Correct. I'm speaking hypotheticlly about the effect this hire can have on recruiting the inner-city Chicago kids.

let's wait and see what happens, but if weis could have gotten any of the guys you mentioned,I'm sure he would have.:)
I think his point was that all of those guys were DB coaches before becoming DC's, just like Brown.
