This weekend is the kickoff of an event to raise money for a memorial dedicated to Commodore John Barry at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) has been working on getting a memorial erected for Commodore Barry for several years now. Barry was an Irish-born American who was a Revolutionary War hero and the acknowledged father of the American Navy.
An AOH member from NYC, marathoner Tom McGrath, is running a route from the front door of his pub in Manhattan to the Naval Academy. He'll average 30-35 miles a day from 7/20 to 7/28. Along the way, McGrath will stop at local AOH chapters where fundraisers will be held to raise money for the cause. Tom McGrath set the Guinness World record for shortest run time across the United States (57 days). He'll make stops in NY, NJ, the greater Philadelphia area, Delaware, and finish in Annapolis. The entire route and more details can be found at Commodore John Barry 250 Mile Run — New York To Annapolis, Maryland, July 20th to July 28th 2012. Sponsored by the Ancient Order of Hibernians..
Any of the IE brethren who can come out to one of these events and show support would be much appreciated. Also, feel free to drop me a PM if you are a fellow Hibernian brother. I've been curious if there are any others in IE land. Slainte to all!
