This is the first year I've followed recruiting to any degree. Once summer was over and the high school season started, it didn't surprise me that the commitments would drop off.

Do the commitments start-up again before signing day? If so, typically when?

While I'm sure signing day is fun for the recruits (getting to be in the spotlight and having their names mentioned on that four-letter network a dozen times a day) having to wait can't help coaching staffs' health. I know Charlie's slimmed down, but this is like a suprise party for a 90-year old; you're just asking for something bad to happen. :)

Yes, it will start to pick up in about a month but, it becomes a absolute frenzy around late Dec.

It gets ugly.

Some people will experience highs and lows like you've never seen. Scurrying home (if no access at work) to get the lastest news. It's pathetically awesome.

Weis said something in his press conference today that I couldn't make out. It was something about recruiting and starting next Tuesday night. Was that for this years recruiting class or next?

we have not had a commitment since july24,filer-does anyone think that how bad the season has been has anything to do with no commits in nearly 3 months?

No, I think it has to do with how many commitments ND already has, and who they have offers out to.

Everything that I've heard states that those who have committed are still firm, but I have touble believing that we won't have a couple jump ship.
Most of the stuff I've read is on Rivals.
Overall, I think we'll pull in a couple more,(Flloyd being the major one) while losing a couple.
I agree with most in thinking that the Irish will be better next year, and these kids want to play now.
We've seen the impact of freshman playing time especially on defense with Smith and Neal, and one can't think that alot of these kids are excited about it.
That and the fact that Notre Dame has nowhere to go but up, (meaning that the people who are bagging on the Irish will have to eat some crow next year) bodes somewhat well for us.

It was for next years class. He also stated that ND wouldn't offer that many kids early for the class of 2009 because they may be only 15 scholarships available so they have to be really selective.

I know that he said that, but with all the transfers they've already had, and dedending on the 5th year guys they'll invite back it'll probably be around 20 again next year.

I don't think he really ment they were just going to be starting, I think he ment they were going to go out and hit the trail hard visiting next year's guys, and checking up on this year's class. We'll probably see a few more official offeres go out too. I guess we'll be checking the flight path of the plane next week.

I wouldn't be surprised if we hear a little more about recruiting next week. It will be our first week off since the season started, so Charlie and the boys will be on the road doing some scouting.

Could be tight for the class of 2009 since

2006.... 24 after 4 transfers
2007.....18
2008.....22-25 but lets say 22 for the sake of arguement (have 19 verbals now)
Plus some possible 5th years in the class of 2005 (Sharpley, Schwaap, Hord, Hand, McCarthy).. Lets say 4 of these guys come back that's 68 total right there. That leaves 17 open spots for 2009 and you know Charlie likes to leave a scholarship or two open to give out to walk ons. So who really knows at this point. We will know better once this class is signed and sealed. I think Charlie would like to get good players in here as soon as possible so won't feel opposed to only taking 15 kids for 2009 if he can get 22+ kids in here for 2008.

Here's the quote:

Q. Real quick just from a recruiting standpoint -- the last couple years you've tried to get off to a pretty quick start as far as getting offers out there and jumping off pretty early. Do you find you've been a little bit behind this year in that sense and why?

COACH WEIS: Because we don't have very many numbers to be able to give out. That has a lot to do with it. When you have 70 guys on scholarship and you're going to have a full 25, you can be more aggressive. But next year that number might be 15. So you've got to be very cautious because all of a sudden -- let's say this year we're taking four or five offensive linemen. Let's say next year we're taking two. It's different when the numbers change. You can't just start -- if you're trying to get five, you have to think about 10. Well, if you're trying to get two, you have to think about four. There's a big difference in numbers. When you start to get the numbers right, which we're about ready to be, now it's like one guy leaves, you replace that guy, and it hasn't been like that to this point. That's why you have to be a little slow when your number is going to be low as far as how many guys you're going to be able to take.

Q. As far as evaluating guys, you feel like...

COACH WEIS: We're all over it. We're all over it. As a matter of fact, Tuesday night of next week we're spreading the country. It's not just for the guys we've got, it's also for the guys that are on the horizon.

I guess CW won't follow Urbie's lead and send out 285 offers when he only has 16 spots available. Go figure.
