So I figured some of the greatest college football people in the world can put their minds together and come up with a plan, or simply vote no and state your reason..
First, get rid of preseason rankings. So I'll start it off by saying get rid of divisions inside conferences. Flat out, #1 vs #2 in every conference, would have got rid of the OU/Texas thing this year. #3 get all conferences on board, regardless of 12 teams or not. So by doing this you are going to pretty much ensure that your best team is going to come out from their conference. Big10, BigEast and the non-BCS conferences won't lose out because now everyone has a championship game in Dec.
Either starting with the above, move forward or wipe out the entire system and start new. Now this is a complete pipe dream but here it is:
Basically teams are divided into regional Super Divisions. Basically take a map of the US and divide the teams equally in quadrants. You play a 10 game schedule inside your quadrant, and then the top 4 in each division would play, then the top 2. There is your 12 game season. The teams that don't make the playoff would still play 2 more games in order to jockey for bowl pairings.
After this is done you should have a pretty good understanding of who your top4 should be. If not, use a random draw and play those 4 teams, then add one more for the true national champion.
