Class Breakdown

What's in the cupboard right now for the Irish as far as the numbers? I may have read a post with the complete breakdown, if so please direct me to it...but is this the numbers as of today?

3 -5th Yr Seniors '04 (Crum, Brown & Lambert)
15 -Seniors '05 (w/ Bemenderfer)
25 -Juniors '06 (w/ Maust)
18 -Sophs '07
= 61 total

24 available for '08 recruiting class?

Nope. Those things haven't happened (yet) so the breakdown is as of now... If and when they do, more schollies will be available to make it total 85. So I take it the numbers I put together are tentatively correct? Like it really matters huh...now that ES may stick with baseball and BWebb is done? Wow...

If we stay at 22 this year. Then we are looking at 19-21 Freshmen in the 2009. Nothing wrong with spreading the classes out. Cuts down on the transfers going forward.

That is sort of why I yap about even class numbers. When you start loading up with max # classes. It leads to mass transfers. Mass transfers will in turn lead to negative recruiting reputation. Much like what happened to Bob Davie during his tenure. Recruiting 20-22 kids per year is the smartest approach. You have well defined classes. Plus you have underclassmen that can see when they have a legitimate chance to play.

i think we take sa many as possible this year... 26 even if we can get them all. Recruiting next year will be hard becuase the players will want to wait and see if the team improves... next years class will probaby be small for that reason... 15-18 recruits

But the 15 recruit classes are what got us in this mess to begin with. You have to have some veteran leadership to win in CFB. It's science!

inless this team starts off really hot. I dont see our class being as good as this years... this years class be something special if ND lands guys like G. Robinson, Walker, Page and Compton or Lewis-Moore to finish off the class. If i was charlie i would take all of those guys if they wanted to come. Next year take 15 is solid guys..

You can't worry about transfers. The cream will rise to the top. Nothing is wrong with a 15-18 recruit class if they are 15-18 studs. Look at the 18 2007 recruits.

Rob is right. We should want to get the classes evened out, so you're always looking at 20 incoming frosh, and five 5th year men. If ND takes more than 23 this year, they'll probably be limited to about 16-18 next year. The 7 man Senior class that is graduating now started out as 17. It's dangerous to careen between 25 recruit years and 16 recruit years.

I am not saying that it should be a regular practice to have such huge swings. ND is in a unique situation in which there is an opportunity to bring in a class this year like no other. If there was a stockpile of talent on this roster, then I would be in favor evening out the classes. But we need help and we need it quickly. If there is an opportunity to bring a couple of impact players at the last second, then lets do it. Who knows how this 3-9 season is going to effect the 2009 recruiting class.

57, I respect your thoughts, but here's how the numbers work out. IF Weis takes 24 freshman, the MOST he can take in 2009 is 18, barring defections. I think everyone would agree that it would be GREAT to have 5 of this year's seniors, and ANY year's seniors, stay on for a fifth year. But, even is only 3 guys stay for a fifth year in '09, that caps the freshman class at 15. That's just too few.

The truth is that SELDOM do players make a BIG impact as freshman, and that is more true the better the overall team gets. BUT, fifth year guys OFTEN provide valuable leadership. I think 23 is as many as Weis should take. If 2007 didn't kill the 2008 recruiting, NOTHING will kill 2009's recruiting!

It would seem to be pretty self-evident from 2007 that it is foolish to load one class up. Is it a unique situation to have such a dearth at the senior level? Yes. But if we take a class of 27 kids then it's just inviting more imbalance problems down the road. 20-22 sized classes are smart - you need some consistency. Maybe you can't DO anything about transfers, but it would be dumb to set yourself up for too many. You put a lot of work into a player to have it pay off mostly in their last 2 years, and transfers kill that. 5th years are an essential part, although ND has so many fewer than a lot of programs that seem to redshirt their entire classes.

I dunno - my point is just that it is better to be slightly undermanned in freshman back-ups this year, than to overload and have a real issue 4 years down the road. I think it may be a more valid point to take more guys if we didn't have so many starters returning, but for better or worse we do have them back.

I agree with that, piyachi. Personally, I think ND would be best served by working toward 20 boys in each class, with 5 fifth year men each year.

Agreed. But consider where we are right now. IF we pull in just the 23 we're looking at now, we will only have ONE class next year that is within 10% under or over, of the 20 man average. Next year, we'll have 18 sophomores. To me, that means that it is URGENT to get levelled off ASAP. In 2009, for instance the team will graduate 25 players!

i think we should get as many as possible for this class. There is way too much talent left on ND's board. If they can get 16 guys i think they should take 26 guys

PS Also, if I figured this corretly, we'll have a max of 15 schollies next year, and THAT class won't graduate until 2012. Meanins we stand to be "imbalanced" for another 5 years. Not good.
