Change is needed at ND

Hi,

This is not a fire Charlie thread...

The university needs to change. It either needs to continue to strive for greatness and modernize their approach to the program or learn to be comfortable being a mid major.

The tradition of ND is special but the team has not been great in 20 years. They need to respect the past but not live in it.

Holtz and the university took chances on kids in the past, got them an education and they were great athletes. But as soon as Rockne's record was threatned they ran a great coach out of town. Holtz could have been like Joe Pa, but instead we are left with a series of failures at the head coach position.

Does ND need to join a confrence? Does it need to lower its standards? I am not an expert, I am just a heartbroken fan who as lived in the shadow of the Golden Dome my whole life and have stood with them through the good and bad years.

I want the program to be great... but I don't know how the can do that when they are stuck with the mindset that they are the only show in town...

They lost to Syracuse...at home...on Senior Day. Have they hit bottom yet?

I don't see much different going 3-5 in the bigeast or going 3-5 between schools in the acc,pac10, and big10

at this point I could care less if they joined a conference or not.I've never been much of a teamplayer.I always did the solo athletic thing and self motivated myself although I had a mentor.

I do know awhile back during haltime of the northcarolina game I was feeling pretty good.
Maybe each week weis doesn't need to be so wishy-washy.It just seems one week it's this offense and the next weekit seems to be something different like he's hiding something.I'm not so sure I've seen him accepting so much anymore either. It's almost like he says "yeah, that's what happens when you execute it that way and if not...then not" like these guys have been playing this system for several years now.

I don't buy into this line of reasoning. People have complained for years that you can't recruit at Notre Dame. That has been proven wrong. I'm sorry, but we have better recruits than Utah and Boise State, but they would probably thump us with ease. We have the talent. We just don't have the kiln to fire that talented clay into a piece of football artwork. We need the fire. Look at all the top coaches: Stoops, Meyer, Saban, Carrol, Holtz (if you're going back), JoPa etc. What do they all have in common? They are quite willing to put their foot up a player's ass up to the knee at any moment. I was watching the OK game tonight and Stoops was going nuts. That's being up by 40+. ND hasn't had that type of coach since Holtz. Student athletes have a jam packed schedule. Not only that, they have to do well in class. That is a lot of pressure. They need a coach who can get them ready to run through walls and focus during both practice and gametime. Emotion in college will give you 10 points per game, at least. Emotion in college will give you that extra yard on fourth and one. I'm sick of the "intelligentsia," I want some dumb goon with guts.

I have heard previously that Holtz left because he didn't want to supersede Rockne on the all-time wins total, is there actual truth to that? You alluded to the University having run Holtz off, but I am curious as to what you know about the situation. Thanks.

absolutely not. Holtz was forced out by Malloy, Wadsworth and the BOT.

From what I heard from folks around SB and what I remember about that time is that as Holtz got withing striking distance of Rockne, the University suddenly put him on a short lease involving recruiting. They took his ability to get boderline student athletes in the door and became very critical very quickly.

Also I was not trying to make the argument for joining a confrence.... I am just sad about the state of the team I love so much and was stating my opinion and venting.

Joining a conference won't solve anything right now.

The only conference this program might be able to compete in is the ivy league. That's what the admin think they are anyway. Until we they start letting kids in who can barely read but run 4.2 40's it won't make a difference being in the ACC, Big East or Big Ten.
