Anyone see the end of the 1st half of PSU/UW game?

UW just scored and was kicking off with about 20 seconds left in the half. Rather play it straight, Bielema went bush league. He had his kicking team go offside intentionally twice - every guy was at least 5 yards offside. You could actually see the kicker waiting to make sure everyone was offside. Each kick ran about 8 seconds or so off of the clock. With the clock starting as soon as the ball is kicked this little wimp game ended the half.

I had no problem with it, these new clock rules are atrocious, Illinois would've had extra time today to run a couple more plays if these new clock rules weren't in place, not to mention they had to rush their final play because the clock starts up. Hurts the end of the game drama IMO.

Depends, if it is a one or two run game, then it is fine, but if it is a blow out, then it is bush league

Baseball's "unwritten" rules are what's bush.

This is about that Schilling-Brenly thing a few years ago. That was a 2-0 game, so bunting for a hit brings the tying run to the dish. And if it were 10-0, who the hell wants to get no hit? Screw that. Lost respect for both of them when they cried about it.

As for Wisconsin, these new clock rules have caused coaches to adjust to them. I think Bielema made a great point today. These rules can be manipulated to your advantage in close games.

They need to be revised.

It's not brilliant. It's unsportsmen like. I coached for years, and i can think of plenty of ways to manipulate the game, but you just don't do that crap. Especially when it's not even the end of the game, which would still be wrong, but more understandable<---- Is that a real word?? I don't know.

I guess everybody against Bielema's call must be against all those players taking their sweet time getting out a scrum pile while trying to run the clock out toward the end of the game. I think it was clever on Bielema's part. Shame on the NCAA for coming up with a rule with ridiculous consequences.

ok then. imagine: you're really good at poker. you're playing with your friend, who is really bad at poker. you've cleaned your friend out. your friend proposes "let's play another hand. if i win, you give me 7 dollars back. if you win, you get nothing." do you take it? if you don't, are you sending the signal that you don't think you can beat him?

same thing here. what does wisconsin gain by giving their opponent the ball back? nothing. do you think the defense cares if the coach is giving the team a better chance to win? it's a no-win situation, and if they have a chance to not play, i'm sure everyone understands.

good point. Even the absolute best defenses give up points. The only sure thing is to not let the opportunity arise.

Did you lose all respect for Leahy over "The Fainting Irish". The rule was changed after that season to prevent such an occurence (and the Irish were voted down in the polls because others didn't like Leahy doing it - as well as winning a lot). There's an NCAA rule that outlawed the Rockne Shift. There's an NCAA rule that outlawed kicking a loose ball, a player may slap it with his hand but not kick it. There was an ND player years ago that used to kick fumbles on the ground then outrace everyone to the ball, pick it up and run with.

Opposing coaches cried foul at the Fumberooski, Tackle Eligible and the rules were changed. One of the announcers mentioned that this action today is a product of rules enacted that weren't though completely through.

Remember Weis commenting about the Bush Push that he hoped his player's would do the same thing? Clearly instructing his players to break the rule.

No man, I have just watched the video TWICE.

That was brilliance...pure Brilliance.

Rules should improve the game not ruin it. This coach did EXACTLY what he is supposed to do.

This is like taking a safety to run out the clock...same deal, no points involved.

It sucks, but it's not his fault...I think it was excellent.

Honestly, why would you NOT use the rules to your advantage??? That's what a good coach does. Spiking the ball is legal? But intentional grounding is not? Tell me...what's REALLY the difference???

I don't know, Bielema young and fit looking. Joe Pa, good for his age no doubt, but I'm thinking if he ran after Bielema, maybe we would see Zimmer and Pedro all over again.
