I'm still not a believer. WVU and Louisville don't bring in enough talent, sure they have some nice players(Brohm, Slaton, Bush etc) but overall they're nowhere near the talent of the other top 10 teams. WVU rarely even crackes the top 40 in recruiting, sure stars aren't everything but you do have to give them some credence, especially since its a proven fact you need consensus top 20 talent to win a national championship, at least thats been the case the last 20 years.
Its not fair that either of these teams have a shot at a NC, they play NOBODY. Everyone else has to endure a tough schedule, or at least a few tough games, and even great teams can lose one or two along the way because its so hard to be on top of your game every week against quality opponents. WVU , and UL don't have to worry about this.
I've watched a few WVU games, and sure their offense is potent, but what speedy defenses have they face? I doubt Pat White runs for 200 yards on OSU, or Michigan's D. I highly doubt they score 40 or 50 points on these teams, and they definitely don't have a good defense. If WVU played in the SEC they wouldn't even be a bowl team IMO, I just can't see that gimicky offense working in the SEC or the top part of the Big Ten, looks nice against crappy slow teams though, much like Urban's offense looked great at Utah, and has been unimmpressive to say the least at Florida. Louisville would have a better shot with their offense, but their defense stinks also. And lets not forget, Louisville lost to USF last year, and almost lost to Cinncy last week.
I like the Big East, and I hope some of the nations elite players start going to those schools, but for now its not a good conference. It is getting there, Louisville's recruiting has been improving every year, and if Petrino stays there its only a matter of time before he's landing top 20 classes. WVU's recruiting should continue to improve, and Wanny at Pitt has done an excellent job recruiting for Pitt. Rutgers has been a nice story, and if Schiano stays and Rutgers continues to win its only a matter of time before they start keeping some of the instate talent(thats another reason I can't take Rutgers record seriously right now, they bring in third tier talent in their own state, and 4th or 5th tier talent in Florida.) Big East needs a couple more years of stability..
I figured you would respond queens.... I posted earlier that I don't think it would be good if WVU would make it to the NC. Their defense sucks, no playmakers. So I will not dispute that. But I will dispute any notion that WVU's offense is a gimmick or that ANYONE will stop their offense from scoring. I don't even know how anyone could call their offense a gimmick, so many teams now run the spread option, including all 4 winning BCS teams from last year. That is just silly. And if you take the ralphwaldo approach using the run pass ration as stance, go look at texas' ratio from last year. If you look at what WVU does closely it is nearly impossible to stop their run game. First they have the best backfield(and fastest) in the country. Second they run 4 wide nearly every play. With 4 wide no defense can put 8 in the box. So then it's a matter of 7 vs. 7 and WVU's 7 vs. anyones other 7 will win nearly all the time. Their o-line is awesome as well. Just ask the Georgia bulldogs last year.
As for the comparting the BE or WVU to the SEC, I will not, becuase ND would struggle in that conference, so would Ohio St, Michigan and USC. Top to bottom its a struggle every week. But comparting the Big East to the ACC or the B12 or the Pac10 THIS YEAR, I'm not sure how you couldn't say the deserve a link to the BCS equal to those conferences.
I will not get into stars but I think you are right 95% of the time. You need talent to win. But every once in a while a team gets a group of unheralded kids that blossom into 4 and 5 star kids. This certainly is the case with WVU.
