I think we had a thread like this last year, but with so many new Domers on the site, I'm starting it back up. Picked up a USA Today special edition of College Football's Hottest Rivalries ($4.95) and got to thinking. It's that time of year anyway.

Here are Jigga's favorite 5 that don't involve ND. It's ND vs. the World anyway.

1. Ohio State-Michigan
2. Auburn-Alabama
3. Army-Navy
4. Miami-Florida State
5. Florida-Georgia

Second Five:

Texas-Texas A&M
Florida-Florida State
Alabama-Tennessee
West Virginia-Pitt
Ole Miss-Mississippi State

Jiggs, you're going to get a lot of imput on this one. I'll accept your opinion but isn't it odd that there are NO PAC 10 teams and 7 of the 10 are in the South?

While nationally, these four aren't big, they certainly are BIG rivals..

Stanford-Cal
U Drubbed - Wazzou
Oregon - Criminals
UCLA - Spoiled Children

I watch the Texas/Texas A&M game every year (comes from going to highschool in Texas) and Army/Navy. I have a tendancy to watch Florida/Florida State and the Ivy League championship. Otherwise, I could generally care less.

As many of you might have guessed, I'm not much of a Pac Ten fan for two reasons:

After drinking all day on Saturday, I can't stay up that late to watch them play some of those games.

2, due to my defensive bias, I simply can't stand to watch those teams try to play defense. Per capita, the WORST pass defenses anywhere in the world.

Well, here are a couple pretty nice rivalries that don't really attract national spotlight, but they are big in the regional areas:
  • Purdue vs. IU - Battle for the Old Oaken Bucket. This is a pretty nasty game and the tailgating generally gets pretty intense, too. Have had the opportunity to attend a couple of these.
  • Oregon vs. Oregan state has "The Civil War" and it always is a good game. I do believe it is one of the oldest rivalries out there.
  • Yale vs. Harvard - Don't know much about it, but I always hear about it when college football rivalries are mentioned.
  • Washington vs. Washington State - Another "Cival War" type of rivalry has had some really, really good games over the years. When I lived in Washington back in the early 90s, I had an opportunity to attend one at Wazzu and it was an amazing game. That's when the Huskies were National Championship contenders and the Cougs had Drew Bledsoe.
  • Lehigh vs. Lafayette - What? Just added it because I believe it is the oldest rivalry on the books.

I saw Wabash and DePauw once.

It was awesome. Small D-3 schools with a very intense, almost high school- like atmosphere.

My dad and I have decided to see a Harvard-Yale game at some point. It is on the to-do list.

Yep, the Monon Bell game is a biggie. I actually watched a part of it last weekend. It was a very good, close game.

ND-USC is my favorite now. During the late 90's until now, I have never missed a Miami-FSU game. When both of those teams are good, it is one of the best rivalries in college football. Texas-Okla is great as well, but only when both teams are good which they have been for the last few years. Florida-Georgia is a great rivalry. Of course, OSU-Mich is a great rivalry, but it loses some luster this year because it's for second and not for the title.

For you readers out there, check out the book "The 100 Yard War" about the scUm-Ohio State rivalry. A great read.

Natural Enemies is a good one as well. It is the history of the scUM-ND rivalry. I plan on reading it a second time once I get caught up on my reading list.
