Best Case Scenario by RYAN O'LEARY BlueAndGold.com Staff Writer
With 20 players having committed to the Irish thus far and for argument's sake, we're going to make it 19, since apparently Jason Kates hasn't told anyone except ESPN and Jason Sapp that he's a solid verbal.
With the very strong possibility that James Aldridge (although not officially confirmed yet) will enroll as an early entry, that leaves Charlie Weis and his staff seven openings.
Two athletes not included in the remaining seven spots include Chris Stewart and Will Yeatman who I consider bonuses – meaning both could come on board and not count toward this year's scholarship limit. Stewart, like Aldridge, is being considered as an early admittance and Yeatman would arrive in South Bend as a lacrosse player. So, let's leave them out of the discussion for the time being.
My list of seven looks like this:
OL - Matt Carufel
DT - Gerald McCoy
LB - Maurice Richardson OR Toryan Smith
WR - Terrence Austin
OL - Sam Young
DT/OL - Butch Lewis
The final spot could go to either LaRon Moore, Konrad Reuland,or whichever of the linebackers isn't already taken. Or Kates, if he decides to stick with one story.[ /B]
Notre Dame’s staff seems pretty confident that they can get most, if not all, of the guys they want, almost to the point where they may run out of spots. Should the Irish run out early, they might even be having buyer's remorse about offering too early with a commit or two.
It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out. Whether these guys wait to announce at a later date or not, we shall see. But if Weis wants someone, he'll likely give the full court press and end up getting him.
If things do shake out this way, with Stewart coming as well, I'd be willing to bet at least one "recruiting guru" ranks this class No. 1.
