Mods, if this should be in the lounge I apologize. The rest of you, I'd appreciate any advice, but please... Let's not turn this into the "should I ask her out" thread.

So I am essentially an underemployed 24 year old with a Finance degree from North Dakota State University. I do payroll and accounts payable for a company. Jobs pretty uneventful and honestly, don't really see how it will lead anywhere.

Our Lady is looking for a full-time intern at the Athletic Department for marketing what appears to be the men and women's soccer teams. If I'm going to get paid shit, I might as well get paid shit to work for Notre Dame.

As you can probably figure out from my presence on a message board, I'm passionate about collegiate athletics and Notre Dame. If any of you have any advice on what Notre Dame looks for, please don't hesitate to give some input. I'm sure it will be a very competitive job application process I don't even get a look at, but I figured I might as well try and the job just opened today.

TL;DR VERSION: give advice on how to get employed by Notre Dame.

I'll be honest I can not give much advice on how to get hired or the best route to take to get hired.

I can simply offer this, just give it a try. Submit your application and resume. The worse they can say is no.

I know this is not what you were looking for but nonetheless I hope you get it.

Find out who the hiring authority is (person who will make the final decision, not HR).
Apply through HR, but send another copy of your resume directly to them. Follow up with a phone call. If you don't reach them, leave a voice mail. Your message should be brief, but have enough to get their interest. Then follow up again. Good luck.

OK, so my wife and I both work for the university. My wife started out as a temp just to get in and has worked her way up, and I got hired about a year ago.

When you fill out a resume, it will go straight to HR until the due date, and then HR sends them off to the dept. What's crazy is that a lot of times, depending on the job, they will extend the deadline because they don't have enough applicants. You would think that such a prestigious university would have people banging down the doors to get in. But not with all jobs. So keep that in mind. My job had only a few applicants the first go round, so they re-opened it and got to 28 applications, and then they started filtering through them. Of course, jobs in athletics are probably a lot more desirable.

My wife has been hired twice there, and she put a TON of time into her resume and her cover letter. Now, she is a grad of ND and so she does have an advantage, but she left nothing to chance in regards to preparing for the job and making sure her application stood out. She just sent in her resume for yet another job on campus, and her application once again got her a phone interview. So that would be one part of my advice - take great care in writing a kick-ass cover letter.

As someone else said, I did send an email to my potential boss, quickly introducing myself and my interest in the job. Nothing long at all, but I just wanted to be on their minds. I got a pre-interview (ND does that a lot), and they liked me enough to give me a full, all day interview with like 12 different people. For both interviews, I researched the crap out of everyone that was interviewing me, so when we talked, I knew what to say that each interviewer would like/identify with.

So I would go for it man. But be super prepared and have your passion come through your cover letter. And if it doesn't work the first time, keep checking the job board for more jobs. Good luck!
