So we have all seen "RUDY" 100 times and still our eyes tear up many times during the movie but none more than when all the members of the team tell Coach Devine that Rudy should suit up ahead of them.

So the question is who was the player who eventually did NOT dress so Rudy could????? (note answer below written backwards with dashes so as not to be obvious while reading this post)\\\

ANSWER: ****a-n-a-t-n-o-M e-o-J*****

"Luck of the....", I found this out reading Digger's "Tales from the Hardwood" - a great book covering ND hoops during the glory years.

I'm assuming that I'm not the only one out here that knows this did not happen and was part of the movie only.

If it really was him, how ironic is that for these two ND players to be connected in such a way. Who would have known at the time?

For me, when he runs out of the tunnel, there is waterworks everytime. If Rudy had gone to Michigan, there would have been no movie.

yeah, i've heard the same thing - the jersey thing was...creative license. i'd like to think, however, that joe offered to sit out, but i've got a feeling it wasn't his choice and he probably wasn't happy about it. ;-)

I am sure that the jersey things was creative license and remember during this year Joe was deep down on the QB depth chart and not a Dan Devine favorite. So I am sure it was an easy decision (and enjoyable) for Devine to bump Montana.

The documentary on the special edition says a few players asked Devine to let Rudy dress in their place. Not the whole team.

My favorite part is that Devine wanted to play Rudy on offense before time ran out and he got pissed off and told Devine he was a defensive player!

They made Devine look like a jerk in the movie...what coach wouldnt want to put him in...Im not sure if Devine himself had to allow them to portray him like that or not....I might of read he didnt know about that..and was pissed....Im not sure tho...so really I have no idea what im talkin about

A 1974 All-American at Notre Dame, Clements started three seasons for the Fighting Irish (1972-74) and led them to a 29-5 record during his tenure, including an unbeaten National Championship season in 1973

Tom Clements was at Notre Dame from 1972-1974
Joe Montana was at Notre Dame from 1977-1979

I cant find the name of the QB(s) at Notre Dame from 1975-1976

Ill bet you all know this already but Montana was the 7th string QB in '77 before he was started.

Maybe we can ask Weis - he was at ND in 75-6 ;)

Montana graduated in '79, meaning he was on the team for the '78, '77 (NC), '76, and '75 seasons.

Somebody else played in here...

Clements graduated in '74, meaning he was on the team for the '73 (NC), '72', 71', and '70 seasons.

Theismann graduate in '71, meaning he was on the team for the '70, '69, '68, and '67 seasons.

After Clements graduated in 74, Rick Slager was QB for 75 and 76 seasons. Irish were 8-3 in 75 and 9-3 in 76.

Montana sat out the entire 76 season after separating a shoulder in preseason practice. In 77 he was 3rd string behind Rusty Lisch and Gary Forystek. (Note: Lisch and Forystek both saw game action with Slager in 76) Lisch got yanked in 3rd game against Purdue and Forystek was injured in the game. On came the comeback kid.

Ah, yes: Rick Slager. He too has graced the cover of SI now that I think about it. Back in those days, being qb at ND ensured you were on the cover of that magazine!
