Unless there's more to the article than the one paragraph I see when I hit the Link, "must contend for BCS" is shades of grey ranging to gray.

Does just missing out on a BCS bowl due to an undefeated BSU (or 5 other teams) qualify?

Does a great W/L record BUT a bunch of teams with "tougher" schedules (or conference ties) placing ahead of ND in the polls and/or computers qualify?

Lou Holtz has publicly set the bar higher predicting an undefeated season and a trip to the championship game. A Gator Bowl (or equivalent level Bowl) is NOT going to look impressive after the Holtz drum banging and Phil Steele's #7 Pick.

I think it states in the article that he must be contending for a game in January. That means top tier bowls including the BCS.
