Knew I'd get you over here. Thought for sure that it was a link to a USC story didn't ya?

We got a call last night from the dad of one of my 6-year old son's classmates looking to recruit my son to play youth football in the fall. He heard my son was big. Yeah it's flag at this age, but it is Texas, and I'm trying to figure out how to potentially get him fired up to play O-line.

Daddy's vicarious fantasy of one of his 3 sons playing football for the Irish begins...son number 1 is on the clock.

I would go with a couple different options. Talk to him about the "team" part of football and how important the oline is to the overall success of the team. LT is usually the second highest paid player in the NFL, you get to hit people every play, you get to eat whatever you want as a lineman and how you make such good friends with the other lineman because how much you guy have to work together.

And yes I totally had SUC tagged for this hahaha

In bold: definitely not true.

Just tell him how much fun it will be. Young boys love to fight. Tell him he'll get to smash someone every play.

Especially in flag football where it's the only position you actually do get to smash people.

He's really excited. We were trying to talk him out of playing once we found out it was flag football, didnt think it would be great for teaching him how But again, it's Texas, and from all indications its pretty physical.

That said, my son is a big softie. So O-line is probably a natural fit for him. Those guys are teddy bears. I'm well aware of what left tackles make. :)

Flag football is a good tool to help teach football an position roles. The physical part will come with time but fundamentals are key to success.
