If you've ever travelled into the southern parts. Hatfield area, all the way north into the area talked about on this segment. You may feel and see some things not necessarily written in our ever changing History book. Racism is a ghost within our society anymore, but I can tell you It's a hate that exists within the blood that flows through those mountains, and only deepens the farther up the holler ya go.
He wasn't from those "parts". He was from a very poor neighborhood that was 1/3 black, that was located 10 minutes from the capitol of the state. The racial divide in the capitol city is there, but nothing like you are trying to describe deep in the hollers of WV. The racial tension he faced in school was from the good 'ol boys that lived up the "creek" 5 minutes away.
