No. 25 overall 2020 recruit sets Notre Dame visit

By KEVIN SINCLAIR

After receiving interest for months, the No. 25 overall prospect in the 2020 class (per 247Sports rankings) has booked a visit to Notre Dame.

Raleigh (N.C.) Sanderson offensive tackle Mitchell Mayes likes what he hears about the Irish, the track record of developing athletes at his position, and Catholic culture.

When the opportunity to see Notre Dame in person arose, the 6-foot-5, 293-pound junior jumped at the chance.

“They were recruiting me in the spring of my sophomore year,” Mayes said. “They came to visit my coach, because they weren’t allowed to visit me, technically. They watched me work out a little bit.

“I heard from them recently, from the Director of Player Personnel in an email. And they said that I could come to any home game this season, so me and my mom together decided that the Stanford game was the best one for us to come to.”

With the interest rolling in, Mayes began to pay attention to the Irish, learn what they offer, and put plans in place to have Notre Dame in the discussion within his recruitment.

“I would say I have a pretty big interest in Notre Dame,” Mayes said.

“I know a little bit about (Notre Dame). I’ve been watching them play. I watched a little documentary – Catholics versus Convicts, stuff like that. So, I know a little bit about the Catholic culture, I guess you could say. When I go there, I’ll be learning a lot.”

Behind Mayes are a few unofficial visits, including Tennessee and North Carolina State. And going forward, the imposing tackle will take in Duke on Sept. 22, Notre Dame on Sept. 29, Virginia Tech on Oct. 6, North Carolina on Oct. 13, and Clemson on Oct. 20.

Clearly, the Irish will have plenty of competition for Mayes if they were to offer the North Carolina product a scholarship.

In terms of making a push within that competition, Notre Dame’s history of top-quality offensive linemen has Mayes’ attention.

“I think they’re great at producing talented o-linemen,” Mayes said. “I saw them in the (NFL) Draft last year, they produced two first-rounders – a guard and a tackle. I think they’re a really good team.”

On film, the Sanderson star’s relentless run blocking jumps out at you, often turning upfield to take on additional blocks with surprisingly nimble feet and coordination at nearly 300-pounds.

With pass blocking acumen that matches his powerful run blocking technique, it’s easy to make sense of his ranking that nears the five-star category.

Keep your eye on Mayes on Sept. 29.

What do you think Crus? Can he play LT? Looks like he would make a great RT, but his footwork for pass protection seems clunky right now. Not to say he can;t get better there, but the film looks that way, IMO. He really blocks well out in space. I think he would fit well in Chip's offense at RT.

Looks like a slow kick to me. Doesn't meet that outside speed rush quick enough.

Body type says move inside. I agree with you, film right now says RT if he stays at OT. Doesn't play from the 3 pt same as Luke Jones in HS so that would need to be worked on. But it's clear to see he's not a Rouse / NPF / Austin Jackson guaranteed LT.
