I just don't understand how a foreign language is not a mandatory part of any high school curriculum.

I'm pretty sure I was required to take two years of a foreign language when I was in high school. That was 20 years ago though.

I was even required to take three years, and my only choices back in the day were Neanderthal, and Cro-Magnon!

(Gigantopithecus was not offered at my school!)

Why any guidance counselor in HS would advise a student to avoid a foreign language is completely ridiculous and should be fired .. Any student who ignores the advice of a guidance counselor regarding completing foreign language credits, doesn't deserve a ND scholarship anyways

This made me laugh. I had the following conversation my senior year with my high school guidance counselor who was also my defensive coordinator.

Him "What are going to do next year? Go to Junior College? Maybe play ball?".

Me "No coach. I'm got accepted to Cal-Poly!".

Him "How the hell did you do that!".

I only took 1 year of Latin because I wanted to coast through my senior year.

In my crappy high school, I knew in 9th grade that if I wanted to go to college I had to take 1 year of foreign language and for some schools it was 2. I don't know if that is still the case today but the college plan included 1 year of foreign language back then. And I don't remember anything I learned. Really didn't learn much anyway.
