Avon (Ind.) High School offensive tackle DeAndre Herron wasn’t sure what to expect in the days leading up to his visit to Notre Dame.

However, after taking in the Irish practice last Friday, the 6-6, 330-pounder was surprisingly impressed.

“I had a good time and liked it a lot better than I thought I would,” Herron said. “They had a lot of cool technological things like the quarterback-camera in the quarterback’s helmet. I was impressed with their practice, and how they were going at such a fast pace. The facilities were very nice too, especially the weight room. You can tell they take football very serious there.”

The 2011 honorable mention all-state selection had the opportunity to spend some time with Irish assistant coach Mike Elston as well.

“He said that they like what I do on the field, and they want me to go to a one-day camp,” Herron said. “They also said they were going to base my recruitment off my SAT scores.”

However, it appears Herron might not wait around for the Irish, or anyone else for that matter.

With offers in hand from Louisville, Southern Miss and Toledo, the Avon standout’s recruitment could be on the verge of closing.

“I’m actually leaning towards one school right now,” Herron said. “I was going to wait and take some more visits, but I’m not sure what I’m going to do now. It might come sooner than I originally thought. I want to go somewhere that will give me the opportunity to play early.”

This is not ND.

Someone needs to tell the person putting the film togtether, they don't really need a box. DeAndre is three times the size of anyone else on the field. If we don't get him I hope Toledo does. It's been a few years . . . I think the last time they won the MAC, about 5-6 years ago, they had the second biggest Division I offensive line.

PS think of all the money they could save not having to draw those big boxes!

On a serious note, this guy is done for us. He said it all; he wants early play time. Someone promised him. ND has the wise policy of giving OL an extra year in the program.

This kid is incredible. Quickness, quick feet, leverage, power... Probably the most impressive hi-lite reel for an OL that I have seen in a while.

Hey Bo! Ya think? I like the kid we got, one from the east and one of the Geo, Caroliana boys. But this guy is powerful big, isn't he? As a matter of fact, here is a thought: Remember a few years ago when everyone was making such a big thing about Sentrel Henderson? (We all know how that turned out.) I think this year there are probably a dozen or so OL that are better! What do you think?

I have not watched a PLETHORA of OLine videos, but from what I saw in this video, it doesn't seem to get much better than this. I mean the guy can PULL and has great quick feet. I never paid attention to Henderson, and I don't watch many recruit videos until they commit to ND. I'll be sure to check those other videos now though.

Kelly seems to think very highly of his line this year. Fingers crossed.

He should he has them working well together. I guess this is the point: Chris Stewart is one of my favorites, but he just seemed to have trouble getting mobile enough to pull and then attack a linebacker, scraping or moving to a particular gap. I think Chris is great, but he is probably one of the last smash mouth linemen we will see at ND for a while. I don't pay attention to who gets beat by who in the spring. What I watch is feet, (a plethora of metaphalanges and metatarsals too!) THESE GUYS FEET MOVE BETTER THAN I HAVE EVER SEEN!!

Down the line from through Cave, Watt, Lombard, Golic, Nichols, Clelland, and Carrico. They all look much better than anybody did last year.

Likewise I thinks they is a PLETHORA of incredibly tallented OLinemen this year (2012)!

I don't see this young man as explosive, but I do see good feet and an unusual ability to "stick on his blocks".

Exploding offensive lineman, what a concept! I guess you could really open some holes that way!

ND doesn't have a policy of giving O-Line an extra year in the program. It's ideal, but it's not a policy. If a guy is good enough to play and help ND win games, he'll play. Lots of lineman have played at ND as freshmen, especially recently thanks to Ty's AWFUL recruiting. Hell, Trev Robinson has played since his freshman year, just to name one. BK is wisely giving these guys a year in the program before playing them, but you're crazy if you think he's telling all O-lineman recruits that it's ND's policy to redshirt O-Linemen. Hell no, not in today's recruiting world.

C'mon man, I know maybe you're excited about our beloved Irish, but this is pretty ridiculous statement, especially if you watch any college football. Henderson, for all his off-the-field crap, was a stud this year. He started 9 games for Miami as a freshman and was named a freshman AA by several publications, including The Football Writer's Association of America and Rivals. Miami's offense went up over 100 yds in production once they started him. Please list for me the dozen or so HIGH SCHOOL O-linemen that are better than he was this past year.

There is nothing admirable about Henderson, personality-wise [though it's hard to blame him for trying to protect himself against Carroll and Kiffen], but on the football field the guy's a genuine monster. All three of my lineman brothers looked at his games and said the same thing...just an athletic brute. We will watch him in NFL uniform someday soon.

I do. This kid is an ATHLETE. His ability to stick to his blocks is because of his quick feet and explosiveness. And...well...his power. He seems to be well coached and knows exactly where to go.

But anyone can look good on a hi-lite video.

Neutered: you're probably correct as your football experience exceeds mine. But watch the video and you'll see what I meant: He is often stoned briefly on the snap, but then his bulling power takes over and he pushes the opponent into the cheap seats. That's why I say that what REALLY impresses me is his ability to adhere to the opponent throughout the block. That's both good feet and terrific core sense of applied force. My opinion, but I'll bow to yours.

OMM...

I actually watched the video twice. Maybe what you call "stoned briefly" I would call his split second football intellect and well coached habits. (I actually don't remember noticing hesitation, but noticed his explosion). The result of that stone brief moment? He gains leverage and knows where to go. And pancakes anyone in front. Geez...he actually blocks level 3 in the video...

We all know now the kid is a well coached ATHLETE.

By the way, I just watched "Blindside" about Michael Oher a few weeks ago. Kinda reminds me of him. Nothing more, nothing less, just a movie I watched...

Met a member of his family recently. Kid is going to louisville, the family has strong ties with charlie strong. Herron wants to commit right now but his family is advising him to take visits and enjoy the free vacations. Asked why he doesn't like nd, they are worried about the academic overload...don't think the kid can handle it. I do think the kid is in love with louisville too. I tried to sway his vote! Lol theres my"heard it from a strong source story".
