IRISH FINISH SWEEP OF ALASKA WITH 6-2 VICTORY
Junior forward Mark Van Guilder scored his team-leading 10th and 11th goals of the season as Notre Dame became the fourth CCHA team this weekend to post a series sweep with a 6-2 victory over visiting Alaska on Sunday evening.
Van Guilder's first-period goal was answered by Nanooks' junior forward Kyle Greentree but the Fighting Irish took control with a four-goal outburst in the first 10 minutes of the second period. Junior forward Evan Rankin put the Irish ahead for good with his first goal of the season at the 2:30 mark and was followed with markers from rookies Ryan Thang and Kyle Lawson before Van Guilder struck again.
Freshman Brandon Knelsen scored his first college goal at 16:18 of the second period for the Nanooks to cut Notre Dame's lead to three goals but Irish senior Jason Paige restored the four-goal cushion just nine seconds later to round out the scoring.
The Irish held a 33-19 edge in shots with senior goalie David Brown making 17 saves in earning his seventh conference victory of the season.
The win boosts Notre Dame's conference record to 7-2-1 on the season heading for a home-and-home series next weekend with Michigan. The Nanooks, who return home to host Bowling Green next weekend, fall to 4-3-3.
