STOKES WAS THE AP 5A 1ST TEAM ALL-STATE KICKER THIS YEAR AS A JUNIOR AND WAS THE INDIANA FOOTBALL COACHES JUNIOR 5A ALL-STATE KICKER ALSO. He HAD 11 FG'S THIS SEASON AND HIT 40 PAT'S IN A ROW. HE HAS BEEN VARSITY KICKER AT MERRILLVILLE SINCE FRESHMAN YEAR. GETTING INTEREST FROM SEVERAL COLLEGES. RYAN WAS ALSO ALL-STATE IN SOCCER AND STARTED ON VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM LAST YEAR AS A SOPHOMORE. MOST ATHLETIC KICKER YOU WILL FIND.

seeing as kickers and punters arent the most talked about recruits i have a few questions i hope someone will answer for me on them. Do the recruiiting sites like rivals actually rank these players or just asign a random rank. Back to this recruit is ryan a kicker, punter, or could he play either position. thanks in advance for any responses

Ryan Stokes is a kicker at the D-1 LEVEL. Prolly could back-up a punter if needed. He is very athletic. He has Mid 50's range for FG'S. Watch his video on rivals most kick offs are back of endzone 70 yard range. Rivals does rank kickers, but have not ranked 2009 kickers yet.

Thanks D ONE, if his leg strength is that good, he is certainly worth a look. We still are looking for a kicker who has the ability to show accuracy(making field goals consistently) and range (kickoffs at least to the goal line).

I often notice that these players are in fact ranked but often only 2 or 3 stars. Even the #1 kicker in the nation is never higher than a 3 star. why is that? Can't the kicker often be the difference maker in a large portion of games? i.e. Vinatieri. Is this due to overall athletic ability or what?

Very good point. I think the stars are somewhat deceiving. There are no kickers in the top 100 because a 3 star is the most they are given, but we all know everyone needs one and they can be the difference in a game. Remember alot of kickers have strong legs now, but mental toughness is the most important thing to a kicker. That can't always be judged at a camp. Sometimes coaches just look for kids that can boom the ball. These are the coaches missing the point. Most FG'S in game are less than 50 yards. ND passed on a FG try (42 yd's) this year to will a game. Why? Doubt it had to do with leg strength. Adam V. DOESN'T HAVE THE STRONGEST LEG IN NFL, but has mental toughness. Robbie Gould has never kicked FG over 50yds in NFL and went to Pro Bowl. All coaches should look for these type of guys. Every year I see some kickers ranked at the top ( because they did good at a camp) and never do anything in college. It's much different with pads on in front of thousands of people.
