And 95% of the people who didn't know the italics was IE's designation for sacrasm post a simple .... "ooops, my bad, I never noticed that" and we move on. It's happened to a fair amount of people. Your reaction tells us who you are. An asshole.

It is not a board rule.
It is a common courtesy that posters use to denote sarcasm but not 100% followed. However, if you see a post in italics, it is sarcasm.
If your post is sarcasm and you don't use italics, it's not a massive deal, but it may cause some confusion. The end result is the poster probably reminding themselves to use the italics next time.
IE could've gone the route of using a "/s" at the end of a post to indicate sarcasm. We did not and I'm not sure that anyone knows why.
