I've been an Irish fan my whole life, but most of my ND memories come from the 80's and 90's. My favorites are Rodney Culver, Michael Stonebreaker, Randy Kinder, Lake Dawson, Lee Becton, Derek Mayes, and Kevin McDougal. And Ofcourse I didn't say Tony Rice or Tim Brown or Jerome Bettis because there automatic.

My Top 5:
1. The Rocket
2. Bettis
3. Battle
4. Powlus
5. Montana
*Honorable Mention - Brown, Dawson, Mirer, Quinn, Walker, Zorich.

Basically I'm a fan of anyone from the late 80's/early 90's (even guys like Rossum, Mayes, and Edison).

I forgot the Rocket. ND's last Heisman winner, oh thats right they gave it to Detmer. That was almost a bad as them not giving ND a peice of the 93 National Title, or the clipping call on the Rockets game winning return against Colorado.

Dorsey Levins and every other NFL-calibre athlete that transfered out because we had too much depth.

Good list lyght but ron powlus. The ten years he spent here are what started this program on the way down

lol...I always liked Ron, even though he never lived up to expectations. But you can bet if we landed Randy Moss, we'd be talking about Powlus like we talk about Montana or Thiesman. ;)

Julius Jones five times. Under the right coaching staff this guy would of won a heismen.

Ty felt he only deserved half the carries last year. lol. Look at him now rushing for 198 on Monday Night.

lol...I think both Davie and Willingham had a quandry with Julius. He's a real tweener back. Almost too quick for the option, but almost too big (and needed better hands) for the west coast offense.

As a VA guy, I like JJ as well...but he always seemed to me to be a better pro prospect than a college back (like the Anti-Ron Dayne).

And I forgot to add Holiday to my list.

Jones averaged 5.5 yards a carry last year, he was splitting carries with a guy who was averaging 3.5 yards a carry.

jones rushed for around 1300 yards last year, if he gets another 75 to100 carries he rushes for around 1800 yards. Jones wasn't named that starter until fthe 5th or 6th game.

True, but he was also returning from his off the field issues. The bottom line is, I always thought he was more of a Pro-Back than a great college back.

I know Lee Becton. He works with one of my friends doing mortgage work. He's a cool guy with tons of good stories.

Tim Brown was recently interviewed on the NFL site and he gave the impression that guys from the late 80s/early 90s still stay in touch. That was a hell of a six year run from 88 to 93. Half those guys must have made the NFL.

1.Tim Brown- nick name says everything
2.Rocket- same as above
3.Montana- you gotta love Joe Cool
4.Kevin Mcdougal-did great things for ND should have won NC in 93
5.John Carney-carried the chargers the year after they lost in the super bowl and won more than acouple last min games for the Irish.

Oh yeah can not forget about Marc Edwards one of the best fullbacks for Notre Dame.

great lists, guys, but it seems like everyone's forgetting one name.

what about anthony johnson? if there was ever a guy that you could rely on for a few yards, it was him.

Hey, how bout some defensive players? I'm relatively young, so for me, Vontez Duff was the most exciting player I've ever had the chance to see at Notre Dame. Not to mention the likes of Shane Walton, Courtney Watson, & now Justin Tuck. Bettis and Brown are a little before my time (at least, their careers at ND are). Jones was probly the best offensive player who's career I could really appreciate. Although, I do vividedly remember Autrey Denson and Jarious Jackson, and loved those guys while they were playing for the Blue & Gold.

Denson was one of the better backs we've had in some time in terms of a four year career. I could see Darius Walker doing Denson-like things.

I love Marc Edwards...he was a beast of a fullback and he was so productive fr us. He was playing for the 49ers, but I don't know if that's still the case.

I also liked Lee Becton a lot...I remember him running for a very long td against USC in a game we dominated them. That seems like such a long time ago.

The fullback trap up the middle....Marc Edwards. Those were good times. Ray Zellars ran the same play the following 2 or 3 years. Whatever happened to Mike McNair from Mater Dei in LA? He was a stud coming in. Kind of fell off the radar.

I'm new to the site, but liked this thread. So, I figured I'd post my top 10:
1) Rocket Ismail - hands down, an absolute gamebreaker
2) Tim Brown - ability to step up in clutch situations
3) Reggie Brooks - 2-pt conversion caught in the corner of the endzone against PSU in '92 made my top 5 plays all time. Still can't wait to play those dorks in 2006. I live in PA, so please understand how much I hate reading about their stupid team.
4) Jerome Bettis - this guy crushed people. the second head to a dominating backfield dragon that included Brooks.
5) Chris Zorich - a man-beast with arms like tree trunks
6) Marc Edwards - best fullback to play at ND. uncanny ability to use his balance and leverage to dominate
7) Julius Jones - character he showed to fight back to make the '03 team explains this ranking. true ND player. great vision to run the ball.
8) Jeff Burris - outstanding dback that could throw down some sweet hits (Zbikowski reminds me of his play)
9) Aaron Taylor - great o-lineman that could move the best of them
10) Jeff Faine - has a motor that never quits. frustrates opponents to the degree of giving up.

O/T: oh yeah dude. i hate psu with a passion. i skipped class and went to their homecoming in 2002 and wasnt allowed in a couple bars because i was wearing a notre dame hat. that whole town thinks the shittney lions are gods gift to football. if they go 1-10 an entire season, the whole college and town will brag about the game they won for an entire year. i have plans to attend that 2006 game as well. i cant wait to se the irish bring that place to the ground.

Have to say I'm still pissed at Taylor for his commentary on Ty's firing. In fact, I really just find the guy pretty obnoxious.

After he spurs the Falcons to a Championship, I expect a lot of bandwagon Rossum fans in here.

No bandwagon here... Rossum never really impressed me all that much in South Bend. But what the hey, he's certainly stepped it up at the pro level.

First ND football game I ever watched in Notre Dame Stadium ('96), I believe against Purdue, Rossum returned an opening kickoff to start the game. Great baptismal experience for ND football. I always liked Rossum after that, but my family of Green Bay fans hated him when he was a Packer.

Yeah. I always had a feeling about Rossum. I mean, he got burned alot as a nickleback...but he is an awesome return-man. He could honestly be the difference against Philadelphia.

Too bad about Culver. I live in S. Fla and remember that day the Valuejet plane went down. It was the day of the Fort Lauderdale air & sea show. About 3 million people show up down here for that weekend. There early rumors that a plane from the show caused the crash. Anyways, it was a sad day to find out Culver was on that plane.

Hey Im new where the hoes at?

I think Kevin Mcdougal is often forgotten when these conversations come around. Lets not forget the game of the century.
