Will the media engage in the obligatory ass-kissing of the new coach?

Or will they lament how impossible the standards are and accuse him of being an idiot for taking the job, etc?

If it's a stud like Shannahan, they'll praise him. If he's an unknown like Clements they'll bash him, saying we fired Ty for someone who's never been a head coach.

That's the danger in hiring Tom Clements.

Very true.

But I think we have to bring in a big name, if only to give the program some "juice". Weiss could be the next Lombardi...but theese days, a coach has to be a celebrity as well as a game manager.

That's why, even though they're long-shots, I think you have to look towards a Shannahan or a Gruden, Marriucci, or even a Butch Davis.

The ideal solution would be a guy like Brown, Theisman, or Montana...if only they had the coaching experience.

How is Butch Davis a celebrity? Or even Mooch? Gruden and Shannahan yes, but so too does Weis have three SuperBowls. I think the powers-at-be want Clements, but I'm still a Weis guy. But Clements apparently has the backing of the Joes, Ara, maybe Lou, and Ferentz. I suspect they like him because of his academic creds.

By the way, I am still of the opinion that they decided days ago what their list was, if they haven't already hired somebody.

Butch Davis & Mooch carry that credibility because they were (are) high profile NFL coaches. Davis also built a powerhouse down in Miami that has remained a top contender for the past 5-6 years.

I wouldn't mind Weiss...but the bottom line is can he bring in the kids that Shannahan or Gruden would?

Bumping this back up as it is a good topic to dwell on some more as it has now been almost a month.

Lyght u might think we will get to another debate - but on 12/7.04 thats what i thought too - Weis would be great but recruting? But obviously he has brought in as good or better kids than Shannahan or Gruden would have obviously. I just wanted to post this cause i thought people would forget to look at the date (like i often do.)

I think it is great that weis is making ESPN look like idiots.

They said Nd is never goin to come back, they will not get good recruits anymore, nobody wants to live in south bend because of the weather, ND will not be able to attract a good coach, the academic standards are to high, et cetera

I just can not wait until the start of the next season so he can totally prove them wrong. And reveal their unprofessional bias against ND.

I can not wait.

ESPN will die if the Pats bring home the Lombardi trophy and ND has a top 15 recruiting class! So far Weis has proved all of those JA's wrong!!!!

Have to admit, Weis is turning out to be much better than I ever anticipated. A month and a half ago I really wanted Clements, and when it looked like they were gonna hire Weis, I thought the university was making yet another coaching mistake. But that all started the change the day of Weis' first press conference. Since then, his stock has done nothing but go up, and I think they made the right choice.

All that said, I really hope Clements gets a head coaching job somewhere someday. He is still a guy who lead the Irish to the promised land all those years ago. But in retrospect, I'm still glad they hired Weis over him.

You must have pulled this right out of my mind because I was just going to post the same thing. When I watched that press conference I was changed for good. He has proven himself more over every day he is on the job, and oh yeah he is not even giving it his undivided attention yet. Man can you wait until he does it full time?

As i have said before I thought Weis was a bad pick at the time. I would have went via Petrino, Hawkins, Davis, Gruden, etc. I thought if they hired clements i would go insane. When we hired Weis i wa like arrg here we go again. The press conference changed my mind when weis said "This is Notre Dame". By the way he said it i said to myself this was the right. I was misty eyed throughout the whole thing. About the worst problem with Weis is he didnt know the Rock himself :sigh: but i can forgive him on that one ;)

I think my biggest concern when they were looking for a coach was that they would hire somebody that only saw ND as a stepping stone and a high paying job. I wanted them to hire somebody that had deep ties to ND and that loved ND as much as everybody here does.
No coach that loves ND and has heard all the bad things everybody says about ND will settle fo anything less than bringing ND back to the TOP.
I knew once I heard Weis was a graduate from ND and the success he has had in the NFL he was the right man.
I think Weis is older than Clements maybe we can get clements in about 10 years im sure he will be around.

Yes I agree I hope he stays the rest of his career like he said he planned on doing. but I was trying to be realistic his age combined with his medical history. Do not want to get in a heated debate on how many years he will be in south bend, but that is my guess of course, give or take 5 years.

I am not sure but I think you can name the number of coaches that have stayed at ND over 10 years on one hand.(although I could be wrong)

Yeah, the problem is they all get pressure to leave right around that time b/c no one wants to see Rockne's all-time wins record get broken. That's a big reason why Holtz left.
