The bad news of Sunday at California will turn into good news Monday when the university announces that Golden Bear coach Jeff Tedford has agreed to a new five-year contract, a Pacific-10 Conference source said.

Tedford, who took over a 1-10 Cal team three years ago, led the Bears to a 10-1 season and a No. 4 ranking. Tedford had been considered the top candidate for the vacancy at the University of Washington, and his name had been mentioned at Notre Dame as well.

The new contract will guarantee Tedford $1.5 million per year, with additional incentives. This year, the university paid Tedford $800,000, and incentives met will push the final total to approximately $1.1 million.

The timing of the announcement couldn't be better. On Sunday, Cal was overtaken by Texas for the final BCS berth, and the outrage could be heard from Berkeley to Austin. That short-term pain has been soothed by a significant long-term gain. The Bears will head to the Holiday Bowl to play Texas Tech with higher spirits.

Notre Dame is definitely not getting a top tier coach for $1m anymore. Time to come correct administration.

There is no reason to think Tedford was or was not approached by ND. I still suspect we will be suprised and happy with who takes the job.

Right, but pretty much EVERYTHING is speculation at this point. Between wading through all of the bullshit, some of it has to be accurate.
