A must read: Amazon.com: The Complete Joy of Homebrewing Third Edition (null) (9780060531058): Charles Papazian: Books

I have done three or four kits. It's fun, tasty, and a little pricey but a fun little hobby.

I've never gone full grain.

I have always wanted to start. I asked my girlfriend and parents for a home brewing kit for Christmas...but did not receive one. My cousin started to brew his own beer a few years ago and it seems like it is fun for a little while then it gets kinda labor intensive and not so fun. I have also heard from my dad who used to do it that it is cheaper to buy all separate parts instead of one of the ready to brew kits.

if you prefer to drink like miller lite and cheaper commercial beers then yes it is more expensive...i like craft beers which can run from 30-50 a case on avg..although it can go a lot higher...so for me it is cheaper because what it costs me for a little less than 1 case i can make 2 cases of beer...but it is the hobby part i thoroughly enjoy

My girlfriend and I did it for an anniversary thing last year. We didn't have a clue what we were doing so we went to a place near Boston which helps you with the process and all of that. It was pricey but it was a good time. I'm actually looking to get into doing it at my house now - i've attached a picture of the label we made prior to bottling - it was pretty sweet.

I am not talking about the beer itself, but more of the supplies to get started.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what type of starter kit to invest in? Would it be better to just go big from the beginning and get the deluxe kit that most sites offer.

this is what i have and will be fine for anyone...you can certainly go w/ the less expensive kit which is 80.00 but it is def more work for you to do and if you enjoy doing it you will eventually need the one i provided the link for..so might as well just go for the best one/best price....i can give u a 15.00 discount if u want to purchase this..

Thanks for the info man. Being a poor college kid, I would love a discount! I have been itching to start brewing my own beer, just been afraid to pull the trigger on buying a kit because I do not know much about them. And like I said, it is a decent sized investment for a poor college kid. I look forward to learning all about home brewing from you guys who are more experienced at it.

'beernews' gets 10% off the starter kits

Be careful, though. A few years back, I moved away for about 3 years for a job opportunity. While I was gone, I kept in phone contact with a buddy of mine, and he was always talking about how he had really gotten into home-beer brewing. About a year later, he came to visit. I hardly recognized him! He was, seriously, about 3 times the size he was the last time I had seen him. He had put on about 150 lbs., and had really become "Mr. Five by Five." I asked him what the hell had happened. He enthusiastically pulled out this 6-pack of beer he had made--an "oatmeal stout." It was good, alright, but you could almost stand a spoon up in it. I bet one of those had about 2500 calories. Talk about a guy getting totally obsessed with a hobby.

I've never met a man that can truly "brew" and maintained the proverbial six pack abs...

To truly delve into a hobby, one must morph, so to speak.

LMAO!
