It's what kept them in the game

Their pts off TOs +12 and 3 Pt edge, 9 pts is what's keeping them here.

ND only hit 37% of their 3s while DePaul hit 56% and while DePaul hit 47% of their shots ND had a sizzling 59.6%.

DePaul had 12 more shots in the game. ND offset that somewhat hitting 16-18 FTs to DePaul's 7-10.

Saw the entire game on ESPN3. Easy team for ND to overlook...easy team for ND to 'take a day off' which they did for much of the game.

But ND stuck with it, persevered, got a couple calls to go their way (that Cooley 'charge' was a block all the way), and won in the end. The better team won, so it's all good. But ND cannot play like that and expect to win many more games. I look at it as one of the heavy legs/let-down games. Happens to all teams - at least ND won the game!

ND was sloppy handling the ball in the 1st half, 9 turnovers) but made only 3 TOs in the 2nd half so I'm puzzled by the taking the day off "for much of the game" comment. DPU apparently has a better bench as ND played mostly 6 players while DPU spread the time more equally among 9 players. ND had 2 players clock 40 minutes and 2 had 36. DPU had 1at 34 minutes and 2 at 30. As a result DPU dominated PTs off the Bench 40-10. Despite a lot of time on the floor Atkins and Cooley each had 22 points. Cooley was 10-12 from the floor with 14 Rebs and 4 blocks (career high). ND scored inside, outside, and breaking.

ND was favored by 12.5 and won by 8 with a dozen ties and a dozen lead changes.

ND dominated the boards +10
ND dominated scoring inside the paint +14
ND won 2nd chance pts 13-8
ND won Fast Break Pts 6-2
ND won at FT Line 16-18 versus 7-10

DPU won TOs 12-7
DPU dominated 3s 9-16, 56.3% versus 6-16, 37.5%

DPU shot 46.9% from the floor but ND sizzled with 59.6%.

Yes, the first half was putrid as far as turnovers. It's one thing to turn the ball over being aggressive...quite another to simply just drop the ball or let it go right through your hands. Simply a lack of concentration, which happens when you're playing a team you're suppose to hammer after playing so many intense games in a row.

As for the 2nd half, it wasn't turnovers, it was their defense that made me say that comment. ND's defense has been lights out (holding Big East teams the way they have has been special; I fully realize their deliberate offense helps), but it was just bad yesterday. Yes, DPaul hit some tough shots, but they had numerous open looks from the perimeter, without guys getting hands in their faces, that were maddening and simply not like them.

Which reminds me - I once went to a coaching clinic and got to hear Pat Riley speak. He was talking about how absolutely incredible NBA shooters were. Said that in a gym, with no defense, these guys are absolutely dead-eye shooters. But his stat guys did a study once, and they said that NBA shooters shot 32% one year from 15-21 feet with a hand in their faces. That's a HUGE drop-off obviously. So when I see teams not get hands up, or get them late for no reason other than intensity, I get a little perturbed. Probably dead legs had a ton to do with it too.

But no worries...a win is a win is a win...

A 5 game win streak, 3 straight on the road, in which, while I am not sure, couldve been underdogs in all 5 games. Come home against a team 2-9 in the league, and everyone patting you on the back telling you how good you are, equals the ultimate TRAP game.

If anything, I am glad the game turned out the way it did. They got a wake up call, while still getting a win. All good.
