Not sure if this has been thrown out there but:

Chuck Berry anybody?

CHUCK_BERRY_021.gif

That GIF is AMAZING!

Love Chuck. But he wasn't an incredible musician. Iconic...influential...heck yeah...
Ted Nugent once said if you can't play every Chuck Berry lick, you can't play rock guitar. Truer words have never been spoken!

Love the way Chuck rocked the pentatonic scale...but he didn't go too far beyond that.

I'm gonna turn on some Berry now!

best and most taleneted musician is the thread title, not what is your current favorite....I like rap music, but no one associated with rap needs to be on a greatest musicans list.....ever. At most, a rap artist is a songwriter.

my short list

'Bird' Charlie Parker...who is better then the YardBird?
Louis Armstrong
Buddy Rich (most talented drummer)
'Papa' Jo Jones (most influencial drummer)
John Coltrane
Elvin Jones

The count basie orchestra from 1933-1949 had the greatest collection of world class musicians ever..

Elvis was a great ENTERTAINER, but not a great musician.
The Beatles were great SONGWRITERS, but not great musicians.
Kurt Cobain didnt kill rock music, he just killed himself.

I agree, there were a lot of bands/musicians who could outplay The Beatles even in the 60's (The Kinks, The Who).

As for someone like John Coltrane I think he was very influential, but I'm not a big fan of his style. I much prefer someone like Paul Desmond.

I think Ryan Leslie deserves honorable mention:

I like some Coltrane, and Elvin Jones' uberness is somewhat an enigma to me. But I can see their greatness; I like Paul desmond as well, Joe Morello is my favorite drummer. He just passed away earlier this year.

I've seen Freddie Mercury mentioned once as singer, and Queen mentioned once as a band. No more mentions? The stuff they produced was incredible. Freddie's voice was the best I've heard, and what other band can top stuff like Bohemian Rhapsody?
