Field turf and jumbotron

I'm sure there is a thread on this (mods move if neccesary) but I'm 90% sure we are going to tear up the grass after the spring game and put in turf! From what I'm hearing, jumbotron is possible next year too, at the very least 2013. Being a long time fan, I am in agreement with both as long as the jumbotron is to help our team and not solely to collect marketing dollars. I was at the michigan game and the jumbotron amongst many functions, served as a conductor per se for the crowd to chant in unison (which was loud as hell). I also think the turf gives our players a better footing, especially in the late part of the season when the weather is getting worse. Discuss.

The Stanford game showed what poor footing does to speed and cutting. As long as we are planning on having speed and shifty backs, we should get rid of grass and install field turf. If we had a straight ahead power game, tall grass, very well watered, would be best.
The jumbotron is a toy and would be fun to have, sort of like an I pad.

Turf and Jumbotron next year. If ND wants to be up with the top dogs they have to have these. The jumbotron is a great recruiting tool and well as a part of the 12th man.

I'm gonna second what ads said. I've heard from someone in the AD's office that field turf has already been ordered.

Should look at the screen MSU is putting up. Supposedly similar to the one U2 has used on their last tour.

I'd like to see what the Packers have-- grass with synthetic mixed in. Go ahead and put the heaters underneath the surface too.

if we got turf, how does that change what we have on the field? I think it would look kind of dumb to have lines in the end zone of a turf... just curious as to your opinions on that

I think they would keep the lines, trying to preserve the tradition amongst the turf, but who knows.

How would having turf make the end zone lines any different? It wouldn't make sense to just abandon that tradition because of the decision to add turf over grass.

I think the turf would be great for this team. But it will also help the other teams we play as well.

Is this just internet chatter or does someone have a real source that the turf is to be installed for next season?

I'm still undecided about the jumbotron, but the turf is a must, IMO. Especially after seeing that Stanford game. It just makes sense.

I listened to a Mike Frank podcast a couple months ago and they also had this discussion. What I found interesting is that many years ago, Notre Dame was offered a jumbo-tron cost free. The only stipulation was that the offerer was the primary advertiser. ND turned it down. Just making a point that expense appears to have no factor in the Jumbo-tron debate.

I think the turf is a great selling point to potential skill guys that are being recruited. Knowing that they will play on a "fast track" has to be enticing to guys like Nelson, Deontay, Darby, etc., etc. Having a good fast playing surface to play on allows them to show their true skill and speed. I'm in favor of this for sure. That cow pasture at Stanford was an embarrasment to the school and the game.

So what you're saying is that it'd make for better football all around? Sign me up.

I wouldn't mind turf at all. It will help both teams, which means we can never get beaten by grass again like we were at Stanford. With the athletes we're pulling in now, it's definitely going to help with our speed.

How does having turf at ND have an effect on the condition of Stanford's field???

It obviously doesn't, I was merely pointing out that poor field conditions bring the performance of any athlete down and no one wants to play on that kind of crap. It would be nice during a recruitment if a coach could point to the field condition as just another positive part of the facilities and a way to help insure better performances. ND has had some poor field conditions over the years as well.

Agreed. I doubt, however, that Noor Davis, Alex Carter, and other Stanford commits are thinking of changing schools because of how their field looked during the ND game.

I'd go so far as to say that natural grass/artificial surface plays almost no part in the recruitment and decision making process for recruits across the country.

It will be. I don't know about the heaters though, but there will be a synthetic blend.

I certainly don't have data to prove it, but I would think that it's just another thing that a recruit thinks about when considering the football part of a decision of which school to attend. Again, it would simply add to the list of pros that are considered. I bet recruits that watched the spring game this year took pause when they saw our players on both sides of the ball slipping and sliding all over thei field. That was nasty and didn't look like alot of fun to play on.

You serious, Clark?! If so, that is awesome-- glad to hear it! I, for one, LOVE the look of the plain, natural surface. But if the viability of the surface can be bolstered by weaving the synthetic in, then I think it's the best of both worlds.

Sorry guys! The source is a trusted lady I know that is a part of the program. She is in the know, however I do not want to share her identity. Lets just say she called the urban meyer to osu before tressel was even fired... No lie. I did not want to post that cause I didn't believe it but she is right every time she tells me something. You want to know how she knew? She talked to him about the job and how the process was going to play out. Opened my eyes to how much backstage antics plays a huge part in programs setting themselves up for the future.
Anyway she knows her **** and I would be willing to bet on this info.
