These new (week 9) standings have some head-scratchers in there. For instance, I'm surprised Penn State jumped up 3 spots to #16 after barely pulling out a win against an unranked Illinois. Or Texas at #21? They beat a bunch of lightweights but got blown away by the ranked teams. And Stanford jumps to #4 after not being to close out USC until the 3rd OT? I know the BCS standings being controversial is news in the same way that the Earth revolves around the Sun & the Pope is Catholic are. But still, it's like the voters are just being lazy.

I think Notre Dame could credibly get into the 20s if they beat Wake pretty soundly this coming Saturday. The Irish may be 5-3, but none of their losses were blowouts; they were all close and hard fought. And all of the Irish's wins, with the exception of Pitt, were very convincing. If the Irish stomps Wake hard and 1 or 2 of the lowest ranked teams lose, I don't see why ND should not get ranked.

I think Stanford deserves to be ranked that high. They're obviously a pretty good team. The USC game was a night game with a packed house at LA Coliseum and they brought their A-game. Penn State should not be ranked at all, and neither should Texas after that butt-whipping OK gave them. And I doubt ND will be ranked just for beating Wake. At this point, I think we'd have to finish 9-3 to be ranked.

I think Stanford is about right. Clemson lost and Stanford beat a good USC team.

you're right they were ranked the week before when they lost to Purdue.

a lot of teams lost ahead of them though. guessing that's the reason.

Biggest joke in my mind is that Oregon beat WSU by double digits and dropped a spot while Arkansas beat Vandy by three and jumped three spots. Both taking place in the top ten. Confusing...

The computers don't look at margin of victory anymore. So beating a team by 1 or 100 is the same thing.

But how is beating Vandy that much more impressive than beating WSU? Four overall spots at that? Even if both teams won by five, I don't see it.

This is unrelated but I don't know how to start a new thread and this is pretty interesting. All four major bowl projections have FSU facing Notre Dame in the Champs Sports Bowl on Decembet 29th - Tomahawk Nation

I was pretty surprised while reading the FSU fans' comments. Usually if you look at another team's blog re: ND, it's full of profanity and abuse toward ND. This was actually pretty respectful. Also, I think that bowl game would be awesome - especially if we've just beaten Stanford.

FSU fans are more concerned about hating teams in their home state and conference.

I understand that but Miami fans were talking all sorts of smack before the Sun Bowl last year. Granted, this is a small sampling of seminoles, but still. Either way, it'd be a great matchup.
