This might be kind of long, but I thought I'd share it with anyone interested.

For the first time in 15 years I was back in my mecca of South Bend for the Navy game. I moved away as a kid and have always been dying to come back, but never had the chance.
Friday Started out early on Friday morning, 5:30 to be exact so that I could get to campus in time to do the Tunnel Tour. It was supposed to be a 4 1/2 hour drive from Cincinnati, but due to traffic it ended up almost taking 6. After getting to my crappy Motel6 in Mishiwaka I headed over to campus at 12:30. Unfortunately my gps in my car failed me, and I ended up getting lost on the crazy streets on SB, only to show up just late for the tour at 2pm.Came back to campus later at 4:30 so that I could pick up a ticket for the game from the extra allotment Navy had returned.(Got an awesome seat in Sec.111,Row 4,directly on the 25.)Waited in line for an hour and a half for the Pep Rally and had a blast! Funny halloween costume contest and a great speech by Kelly and Harrison Smith, also by the walkon(who I can't remember his name.) Now my day turns to a roller coaster. I walk out to the library parking lot(where I believed I had parked) and there are almost no cars in the lot...I'm at a loss for words.I looked around for 15 minutes and couldn't find it. I track down a security guard and he very nicely offers to drive me all over the lots just in case, at the last possible place, once I've thought it's been stolen, it turns out I am retarded and completely forgot where I parked.lmao
However, thankfully the night got much better. Went to my favorite restaurant, Rocco's, for the first time in almost 2 decades, and besides the renovation it hasn't changed. Same amazing atmosphere, gracious hosts, and the most delectable food imaginable. It was so nice talking to the owners again, and telling them how much my family has loved that place.

Saturday
Woke up early so I could get over to campus early and get good parking.Ended up at Holy Cross which wasnt too bad price, and not too bad of a walk.
Walked all around the campus.Started off around the dorms and quads, then made my way over the the Basilica and the Grotto(where I had the nicest prayer for my dying great-uncle...It meant a lot that I could do that in such a special place.)Then made the short trek to the Golden Dome...got some amazing pictures on my FB if anyone's interested.
Then I just had to check out the new Ice Arena...WOW...very well done..(One thing I'm curious about,if anyone could answer, what is the deal with the new ND logos in the corners overhanging the ice?Very interesting.)
I then wanted to head over to Labar real quick to check out the tour before the Player Walk but the thunderstorm hit so I couldnt. After holding up in the Arena again until the storm ended, I went over to The Gug to see the players...got real close to all of them, with a good pic of Kelly and said hey to Harrison Smith.
Then I had my 1st of only 2 disappointments of the weekend, and don't hate me....but after what I've heard from everyone I was dying to try a KOC Steak Sandwich...so I go over and wait in line for an hour, was even nice enough to do the All-In for charity, and I got to taste the most delicious shoe of my life!...that was the toughest, rubberiest piece of meat I've ever tasted(that's what she said.)I was upset.
After that went straight to the stadium ('It was the most beautiful sight these eyes have ever seen.')
AMAZING GAME! F-18's flew directly over my section. That was a really cool start. Then just an all-around amazing game on all sides of the ball.
After the game I had to go over to my old stomping ground at Wings Etc....and this is where I had my second disappointment.I'm a big hot-wings guy, and honestly don't normally have trouble with hot sauces...I got their TNT wings which were only their 3rd hottest, and could only eat a few...wayyyy too peppery..oh well...still a cool atmosphere to watch the great Stanford/USC game.

Sunday
Woke up early and left the hotel.Had a few things I had to take care of.
Went over to my Dad and I's old home course at Morris Park.(still as beautiful as ever.) And got him a nice little gift. Then I just had to go to the College Football HOF.(I was always upset growing up because they literally opened the exact day we moved away from South Bend...such bad luck.) Wow that was fun...stayed there for 2 hours and still only saw about 70% of the stuff. That was cool.
Then I had to go to see my old home in Granger at Knollwood. Still so pretty over there. Then headed over to my old elementary school and had some great memories. Then drove back the 4 hour drive.

I just wanna say thanks to any of the great fans I met this week, the owners of Rocco's, and anyone else I might have befriended that were all so incredibly nice and friendly to me in my first home gameday experience with The Irish. It will always be a memory I'll never forget.

Sounds like you had a great time. I need to get up there soon. I'm from the Dayton area and haven't been since the Georgia Tech disaster in 2007.

Sounds almost like my trip. It was my second game ever but actually my first experience. I went to USF but got tickets friday and drove 13 hours or so Friday night, made it just in time, blah blah blah .. longest game ever.

Anyway, your mention of the Grotto ... blew me away!!! I was with a bunch of in-laws who have gone every year to 1 game for like 18 years. When I got in line I teared up. When I got through the little fence I dripped tears. When I got the punk and went to light a candle for my mom, brother and uncle I lost it. Was able to soak it up real quick because my darn punks kept flying the flame straight to my fingers and the candle wouldn't light!!! Made me mad lol. Amazing experience.

As far as the KOC Steaks ... the one I had was incredible!! But I can see for sure how some people would get bad ones. Glad you enjoyed your trip. Even with the good comes the bad but at the end, you're there for 1 reason... a big fat W!!

How did you live here so long and never go to an ND game? Must have been pretty young when you left, huh?

I was the same way...I teared up at the Grotto. And I also couldn't get my little stick to light at all.lol.it was frustrating.
@Nanker I left when I was 11...at that time I and all of my friends were really big into baseball and soccer.I honestly had zero knowledge of football until right before I moved...yeh it sucks thinking back at it...but I loved that area...to this day I think of the 'what-ifs' and if I might've had a chance to go to Notre Dame as a student if we hadn't moved....can't live in the past though, look back fondly and think to the future.
Oh,and to any people to say ND girls are ugly...they are just flat wrong! I mean, you have the usual amount like any other school, but WOW! I fell in love with several ladies this weekend.lmao. Combination of cuteness and love of ND is all I need in a lady. lol.

Glad you had a good time. I guess I was just lucky. Living around here, it seemed like there was always somebody wanted to treat a kid to an ND game. I think I was 6 when I went to my first one. ND kicked Purdue's butt, 48 to 10 or something like that. All I really cared about was getting one of those neat bobble-head dolls and an ND pennant for my bedroom.

If you talk to some of the people around here, you were lucky to move when that thing opened up. It has lost a ton of money, all of which has been picked up by the taxpayers one way or the other. It is really an albatross around the neck of South Bend, and the vast majority can't wait till it moves out. Lots of ideas have been floated for uses of that property that will actually pay for themselves.

Yeh I knew they were way over their heads in their predictions. I heard when they opened they expected 100,000 people/year but have never been anywhere near that. I didn't know they were such a detriment to the community though. What are the ideas floating around about what they're gonna do with it?

I used to live in South Bend (until late 1999) and I remember the HOF uproar. Every time I visited the college HOF, the place was thinly attended. I never understood why South Bend didn't get together with Notre Dame (share revenue) and build a Notre Dame football hall of fame on Eddy or someplace reasonably close to N.D. I think that would've been a bigger draw.

Was in awe the whole time

Was in awe the whole time

My first-ever experience on campus was the USC game ... got there around noon Friday, did the stadium tunnel tour and got to hold the old and new helmets, we had lunch over at the alumni tents (great deal on food) and watched the marching band practice step off, etc.

We did the pep rally and got pretty close, which was cool with Tim Brown being there and all ... from there it was the Joyce Center for the men's and women's Irish Madness and that was a big highlight as the entire women's team signed my 3-year old daughter's basketball (which she goaded me into purchasing at the bookstore earlier in the day) and Skylar Diggins took a photo with her.

We did the grotto at night, which as many have mentioned, was both moving and overwhelming ... I didn't even have to tell my little one to be quiet, she never once said a word as I think even she knew it was a special place.

Drummer's circle was cool at night, but thought it kinda ran long at 45 minutes but still fun to watch ...

Saturday we got there fairly early and fed the ducks at Saint Mary's Lake, went to the post-game mass (which was before the game) and it was done by the Bishop of Peoria, Ill., so that was cool as someone who attends mass regularly ... we did player walk right there by touchdown jesus, followed by the band concert on the steps, trumpets under the dome, and on to the game.

The game was obviously a dud, but towards the end when most were filing out my daughter had her green and blue pom poms (another purchase I was goaded into) and was cheering and happy as can be, so it was hard to bee TOO upset about the loss. We had a USC-ND mini-football that she also had some USC players sign afterwards (Couldn't find the ND players leaving).

And I've heard a lot of people say it, but once I experienced it first hand I can surely say it definitely IS a special place and everyone is just so friendly (I even overheard USC players saying similar thoughts after the game).

All in all, the weekend was about as perfect as it could possibly be (weather included).
