So what message does that send? What message is recieved by Athletic/Compliance departments around the country by one man losing his job over some pretty serious charges?

The message is clear: lie when it is to your advantage, deny everything even when it is obvious that that is not the case, obstruct inquiry by all means available, get lawyers involved as soon as possible and, most importantly, LEAVE NO PAPER (OR ELECTRONIC) TRAIL.
And, of course, reward those who fall on their sword.

IF the NCAA were to ban Tressel from ever coaching again, it would send a message to every coach out there who is thinking that maybe what is going on is not such a big deal. That message? Lie to us about it, and you will never coach at an NCAA school, or participate in an NCAA event again.
